If a govt decides to ban cow slaughter, the half educated intellects and secular economists shout that many will go jobless if the slaughter houses are shut down. But no one speaks about the billion dollar benefit the earth will get if the cow slaughter is banned.
Today, beef is chewed on street as a symbol of protest against the Modi government. Researchers have said that red meet require 28 times more land than pork. Not just this, red meet also requires 11 times more water. Most alarming stats is that the red meet results in five times more climate-warming emissions.
Beef requires 160 times more land when compared to potatoes, wheat, and rice resulting in 11 times more greenhouse gases. So if consumption of beef is reduced, the environmental condition will be drastically improved.
A large part of global warming is also due to agricultural practises. Yes, 15 % of global warning emission and causes is due to agricultural practises. Out of this 15 %, majority is claimed by livestock.
Prof Gidon Eshe spoke about the importance of reducing the consumption of meet in the diet. He said that the easiest way to reduce meet consumption is by cutting the subsidies for meat. This statement holds very much prominence when it comes to India. In India, the slaughterhouse is flourishing only due the subsidies given by the government to butchers who smuggle cows.
“Governments should consider these messages carefully if they want to improve overall production efficiency and reduce the environmental impacts. But the message for the consumer is even stronger. Avoiding excessive meat consumption, especially beef, is good for the environment”. These were the words of Prof Mark Sutton from the UK’s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
Study also said that meat consumption can reduce the food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050. It also revealed that the emissions would be brought down by 63% if majority of the people would embrace to be vegetarian.
“Imbalanced diets, such as diets low in fruits and vegetables and high in red and processed meat, are responsible for the greatest health burden globally and in most regions. At the same time, the food system is responsible (currently) for more than a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore a major driver of climate change.”
These were the words of Dr Marco Springmann who was a lead author of the study titled Analysis and valuation of the health and climate change co-benefits of dietary change.
If we want our grand children to be healthy than we need to take this decision of quitting beef. Several intellects had advised us to quit the bursting of fire-crackers during Deepawali celebrations. Using the same logic, let us encourage others to quit the consumption of beef in order to protect the future of this earth.
We are not forcing the beef consumers to consume only vegetables but they can survive by consuming pork, chicken and fish too. But sadly, this is very hard to be implemented in India because few consume beef just to hurt a certain religion in India. The best example was when a calf was slaughter in Kerala by a century old political party just to protest the decision of central government.
