At an altitude of 13000 ft, where there is not enough oxygen to breathe, the temperature is well below zero degree mark and the conditions are extremely hostile, Havildar Hangpan Dada of 35 Rashtriya Rifles did something unbelievable. His story will put any superhero to shame. On 26 May 2016, he spotted four heavily armed terrorists who were infiltrating into Indian territory in Shamsabari range of Kupwara district (Jammu & Kashmir).
Sepoy J N Baite detected the infiltration and soon reported it to his officer. Two teams went ahead to neutralize the militants, one of them being led by Havildar Hangpan Dada. With his experience of high-altitude warfare, Hangpan Dada soon blocked the escape routes of the terrorists. Once their escape routes had been blocked at such a high altitude and he ensured that they could not return to the other side of the border, he engaged them in a gunfight. He took the charge, and closed in upon the terrorists by crawling between the rocks. He then single-handedly killed 3 terrorists. While he gunned down two terrorists, the third was killed in a bare-hands combat. While Dada was neutralizing the 3rd terrorist, 4th terrorist opened fire on him . He received multiple bullet injuries in his abdomen.
Despite being hit by bullets and profusely bleeding, he took on the fourth terrorist as well, badly injuring the militant. The fourth terrorist was soon killed by other soldiers of his team. By killing 3 heavily armed militants and injuring the fourth one while injured, he foiled the massive infiltration bid on his own.The entire encounter, named as Operation Sabu Dada, lasted for 24 hours. After 24 hours of encounter at the altitude of 13000 feet and hit by bullets, he dedicated every breath of his to the nation. Soon after, he succumbed to his injuries and left a legacy which will continue to inspire every single Indian.
