The Sethusamudram project that facilitates navigation between the country’s east and west coasts is being given impetus by the Modi government. But one issue that came up with the project is that alignment number 6 of the project was to pass through the historical Ram Setu.
Even in 2014, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had categorically stated that the ‘sacred structure associated with Lord Ram’ won’t be damaged. Now, the government has decided that any alignment – whether original or alternate – that damages the Ram Setu won’t be approved.
The Modi government has taken a firm decision not to go ahead with the original alignment of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project in order to protect the Ram Setu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself decided that the government should file a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court making its stand on Ram Setu clear.
Now the Shipping Ministry will come out with a detailed proposal that would be placed before the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), following which the fresh affidavit would be filed in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had earlier this month asked the Centre to make its stand clear on the project. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud had directed the Centre to state its position.
This decision of the government is very appropriate. It keeps in mind the sentiments of Hindus as the Ram Setu is very sacred to them. Any tampering with the Ram Setu would have been absolutely unjust.
An interesting fact is that the Congress-led UPA had agreed to discussions on the Sethusamudram project passing through the Ram Setu! The BJP had opposed it saying that the Ram Setu was associated with Hindu sentiments as it signified Lord Ram’s passage to Sri Lanka.
Isn’t it funny that the same Congress is today boasting of being Hindus? The same party said that Lord Ram is a mythical entity, the same people who opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he began a speech of his on Vijayadashmi with ‘Jai Shri Ram’, are today preaching on Hinduism. And now this fact also comes to light that the UPA had no issues with the Ram Setu being damaged. How shameful these Congress leaders are!
