As we decked our homes with dazzling electric lights, residents in many villages celebrated Diwali for the first time with electricity in their homes. Having been deprived of a basic need like electricity, the newly electrified villages lit up with the joy of finally seeing light triumph over decades of darkness. Their special Diwali was made brighter by Centre’s rural electrification teams who organized “Urja Utsav” in these villages and celebrated their Diwali with the residents. Pictures of the Urja Utsav events came in from several villages in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and others.

The Urja Utsav was organized by Centre’s GVAs (Grameen Vidyuteekaran Abhiyan) who are monitoring the implementation of Modi government’s mission of lighting up India’s remotest villages. They have the challenging task of seeing that all states electrify the 18,452 un-electrified villages one year before PM Modi’s 2018 deadline. Power Minister Shri Piyush Goyal congratulated the teams on marking the festival of lights as the festival of electrified India.

The fact that the officials celebrated their Diwali with the people in the villages shows that the government is not taking the task as a mere job, but truly connecting with the people. The smiles of the people celebrating Urja Utsav are delightful highlights in the ‘Transforming India’ journey, and only make us eager for the day India celebrates Diwali with electricity reaching each and every home.
