Heavy rains and a sudden cloudburst near Sahastradhara triggered flooding across Dehradun district on Monday night, leaving several areas inundated and disrupting daily life. The local administration has issued a red alert for floods and landslides while schools and Anganwadi centres remain closed as a precaution.

Incidents

  • The Tamsa River overflowed and flooded the premises of the historic Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, forcing devotees and shopkeepers to evacuate.
  • A cloudburst near Sahastradhara trapped five people in a swollen stream; they were rescued by police and SDRF teams.
  • Shops, restaurants, and hotels in low-lying areas suffered heavy water damage, while several residential colonies faced waterlogging.

Impact on Public Life

  • Continuous overnight rain led to severe waterlogging on major roads, disrupting traffic and cutting off some areas.
  • Power cuts and damage to water pipelines were reported in parts of the city.
  • At least seven rain-related deaths have been reported in Dehradun district since April 1, with total property and infrastructure damage this monsoon season estimated at ₹102 crore.

Government Response

  • Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reviewed the situation and directed officials to monitor vulnerable areas.
  • Disaster management teams remain on high alert, especially in landslide-prone hilly terrain.
  • Relief and evacuation work is underway in affected localities, with shelters being arranged for displaced families.

Safety Advisory Issued

Authorities have urged residents to:

  • Avoid travelling through flooded or landslide-prone areas.
  • Stay away from rivers and streams until water levels recede.
  • Follow official IMD alerts and district administration updates for safety instructions.
