After creating History in assembly elections in Tripura, BJP sweeps Gram Panchayat polls unopposed!

Just few months back, the BJP created History by sweeping the Assembly elections in Tripura for the very first time. The left party which had dominated Tripura for nearly 30 years, was blown away in BJP wave. Now, the BJP has again proved its surge by winning 96% of the Gram Panchayat seats, Panchayat Samiti seats and all the 18 Zilla Parishad seats in Tripura.

These seats fell vacant as most of the left part leaders resigned from their post after BJP formed government in Tripura. Elections were held for these seats in which BJP won 3,075 Gram Panchayats, 154 Panchayat Samities and all the 18 Zilla Parishads seats.

The by-elections to another 3,386 seats — 3,207 Gram Panchayat seats, 161 Panchayat Samiti seats and 18 Zilla Parishads seats — are scheduled for September 30.  However, the left parties are now feeling the heat and are requesting the Election Commission to postpone the byelections fearing defeat.

The Opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front, the Congress and the IPFT, a tribal-based party, separately urged the SEC to reschedule the ongoing election process as they claimed that “massive violence prevented their nominees to file papers” (Economic Times). The Left parties and Congress who are losing ground in Tripura indulged in violence disturbing the elections process and blamed BJP for the violence.
The CPI-M central committee member Gautam Das, after a meeting with Tripura State Election Commissioner G. Kameswara Rao, told the media: “The atmosphere is not conducive to hold free and fair Panchayat elections in Tripura. Out of the 35 blocks, non-BJP parties were not allowed to file nomination papers by the ruling party supporters in 28 blocks.”
The Left workers complained that the BJP was not letting them file nominations and therefore wanted the elections to be postponed.
This tactic more so looks like an attempt by the Left parties to save themselves from embarrassment. The changes that is being brought in Tripura is being appreciated largely by people which has panicked the Congress and Left big time.
The Left which destroyed the East for nearly 30 years with their anti India rhetoric is now fighting an existential crisis with the surge of Nationalist parties.
