“I have always had deep admiration for India and Indians” : Donald Trump welcomes Modi in White House

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump in the white house, where he was welcomed by President Trump and first lady Melania. Both the leaders held a meeting in the cabinet room of the White House, which was attended by the cabinet ministers of the US government. Multiple issues regarding trade & commerce, economy, terrorism, naval exercises and defense deals were discussed. US state department approved the sale of C-17 military transport aircraft worth US$ 365 million. Another deal that was discussed during the meeting was pertaining to the sale of drones worth US$ 2 billion. “The relationship between the United States and India is very, very strong and very, very powerful,” Trump said during the meeting.

After the meeting, President Trump and PM Modi issued a joint statement in the Rose Garden of the White House. Trump began his speech with praising India and its rich culture. “I have always had deep admiration for your country and your people,” he said. He recalled his election campaign speeches where he had promised to the Indian community that if he is elected, India will have a true friend in the white house. “The relationship between India and USA has never been better,” Trump said. The US President showered heaps of praises on PM Modi for his commitment to the development of India, creating infrastructure and fighting corruption in the government, which the POTUS referred to as a threat to democracy.

Trump praised PM Modi for implementing the GST, calling it the biggest tax reform in the history of India. “You have a big vision for improving infrastructure and fighting corruption. India is the fastest growing economy in the world and we want to catch up with you on that soon (in terms of percentage increase),” Trump said. The president spared no words when it came to terrorism. “We both are determined to destroy terrorist organisations and the radical ideology that drives them. We will destroy radical islamic terrorism,” Trump said. PM Modi also invited Donald Trump and his family for a visit to India. Narendra Modi was the first leader to have White House dinner with Donald Trump.
