Bharat Mata Temple of Varanasi is the only temple dedicated to Mother India. It is situated near the Mahatma Gandhi Vidyapeeth Campus. The Bharat Mata temple does not have a traditional statue of Gods or Goddess but it has a real map of the Mother India which is made up of marble and looks like a model which symbolizes the entire India, represents mountain, plains and oceans of the India.
The temple is a kind of admiration to all those who took part in the formation of India as it was built before the partition of the India. It was built by Babu Shiv Prasad in 1936 and inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi.
The Bharat Mata Mandir was constructed under the guidance of Durga Prasad Khatri. It bears the names of 30 workers and 25 masons who were engaged in construction of the temple. Their names are mentioned on the plaque in one corner of the building.
The Map of Undivided India:
The Bharat Mata Mandir which displays a map of Undivided India in the centre of the building shows Afghanistan, Pakistan including Balochistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar as Burma and Sri Lanka as Ceylone and marble was brought from Makrana (which is now in Pakistan).
The map is said to have a detailed layout of 450 mountain ranges and peaks, vast plains, water bodies, rivers, oceans and plateaux. The map also shows the scale and depth of the geographical entities mentioned on it.The pick of the landmarks on the map inside Bharat Mata Mandir are Mt Everest and K2 peaks, and also the Great Wall of China.
Also the water bodies depicted in the map are filled with water and the land areas are decorated with flowers on the Republic Day and the Independence Day,
One inch of the area in the map covers 6.40 miles on land and from a window installed at the ground level in the basement, the difference among the heights of the various peaks is clearly visible.
Eight floors with eight different themes
The eight storied building has an approximate height if 150 ft. There elevators inside the temple and each floor has a particular theme.
On the first floor, a statue of Bharat Mata adorns the hall, in which the goddess is holding milk pot in one hand and stack of grains in the other hand. The second floor known as the Shoor Mandir and is dedicated to all the heroes of India.
Third floor is called as Matru Mandir and is dedicated to all the legendary women like Meera Bai and Savitri. The fourth floor is dedicated to the saints and is known as the Sant Mandir.
The fifth floor has an assembly hall where all the practicing religions are depicted in a harmonious manner. The sixth floor is the Mandir of Goddess Shakthi in her various forms such as Durga, Saraswathi and Kali.
The seventh floor is dedicated to all then incarnations of Lord Vishnu such as Ram, Krishna and Matsya. The eighth floor offers a splendid view of the Himalayas and the whole complex of Sapt Sarovar.
The unique features of this temple is its unique design as it stands on five different pillars with each pillar symbolizing five elements of creation such as earth, water, fire, sky and air All these pillars finally submerge at the top symbolizing that all the elements must ultimately merge with supreme.
