The Church has been rocked with another scandal after an Indian Catholic priest from Telangana was held in the US for sexually abusing a minor girl twice..

The Catholic priest who was arrested was John Praveen Kumar Itukulapati who was preaching in Rapid City diocese in South Dakota state. On 3rd October the priest was arrested and has been charged with two counts of sexual contact with a child under 16, a crime which carries a punishment of up to 15 years in prison and/or a maximum fine of $30,000 on each count.

As the investigation proceeded, it was found out that the father John Praveen Kumar Itukulapati had made sexual contact with the minor girl twice. Suspecting that the priest might have exploited several other girls, the investigators have given out a contact number so that others could file complaint if incase they were harassed by the priest.

Reports said “the Rev. John Praveen made a first appearance in court on Wednesday before a magistrate judge via interactive TV from the Pennington County jail in Rapid City. The judge kept his bond at $100,000 cash only and set Praveen’s preliminary hearing for October 18. The Rapid City Police Department, in a statement, said that their department and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) conducted a joint investigation on September 30 when a juvenile victim came forward to report the incidents”.

Why did the Indian priest go to United States?

The father who is now arrested for sexually harassing a teen was earlier serving with the Sanjeev Sadana Society (Holy Spirit Fathers) in Telangana. But in November 2017 he was approved by his congregation to serve in South Dakota for ten years and was appointed as a parochial vicar, who acts as an assistant to the pastor.

It should be noted that the recent sexually allegations are brought to the notice of police by either the female devotees or the nuns. This is indeed a path breaking moment because if the women decide to take on their sexual harassers or rapists, then probably these incidents could reduce.
