BJP-SAD Alliance Sweeps Chandigarh Municipal Poll – A Landslide Victory

Congress which was ruling the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for last 14years, lost its battle ground to BJP-SAD Alliance which clinched 21 seats out of total 26 seats of Municipal corporation, Chandigarh. Congress won merely 4 seats, while one seat was won by an Independent candidate, who was a BJP rebel. With this BJP—SAD Alliance has come with a comfortable majority in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. As there is need of 19 votes in the mayoral poll to win seats of mayor, senior deputy Mayor and deputy mayor, it seems that BJP-SAD will have their mayor for next five years. BJP had contested on 22 seats, while SAD was given 4 seats. Sitting Mayor and BJP candidates Arun Sood also managed to win his seat from the Margin of over 2,000 notes. He defeated congress candidate Rajesh sharma.

The overall polling percentage in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation was 59.4 per cent. Election to 26 wards of the Municipal Corporation were seen as a Litmus test for BJP & Congress post Demonetisation. Total 122 candidates, including 67 Independents, contested the Polls. The total number of Voters were 5,07,627 including 2,37,374 women women voters. Both congress and BJP contested all 26 wards, while BSP had also put up candidates in the fray from 17 wards. The Municipal Corporation has 36 members, of which 26 are elected councillors, nine are nominated Councillors and one is an MP (ex Officio member of the House). In the last house, BJP has 15 councillors, Congress has Nine, BSP has one and one is Independent.

Congress & others had made Demonetization a huge issuerather amajor one in the polls, with its city unit leaders saying the move was was implemented without any “Homework & application of mind”, and had made Aam Aadmi to suffer or rather face hardships by standing in queues as well giving interviews to Paid Media that lives are lost while standing in the queues, politicizing the issue to the hilt, whereas entire Nation though facing short term inconveniences are fully supporting this move by PM Modi.
