Blow to Ghatbandhan, Sharad Pawar opts out of polls, says he won’t contest 2019 Lok Sabha elections!

Looks like the Ghatbandhan has faced a massive blow even before the heat of the elections have started. Just a day after the Election Commission announced the Lok Sabha election dates, the NCP chief has declared that he won’t be contesting the 2019 elections.

The NCP which has been a close ally of Congress and Sharad Pawar being very close to Gandhi family has given Congress a big shock as he backed out of elections. The Congress was looking for a alliance with NCP to go against BJP-Shiv Sena alliance which is now seems to be in the driving position. But now Sharad Pawar’s decision to back out from elections has left Congress in a fix.

Sharad Pawar who is also a prominent member of the ghatbandhan has caused a major embarrassment to the group which said they had united to defeat Modi. The 78-year-old politician Sharad Pawar said that two members of my family are already contesting elections and it was the right time for me to retire. The NCP president made the announcement while addressing a political programme in Maharashtra’s Pune. The NCP will be contesting this year’s elections along with the Congress. In Pawar’s place, NCP senior Vijay Singh Mohite Patil or his son Ranjit Mohite Patil would contest the general elections from Madha Lok Sabha seat.

Sharad Pawar said he felts that this is the right time to take the decision to not contest this year’s elections since he has contested 14 times in the past. Reports said that he will be campaigning for the NCP for Lok Sabha elections.

However, few political experts did express apprehensions over Sharad Pawar’s decision and said that he may take a U turn anytime as elections approach. This may also be an election gimmick by the NCP chief to earn brownie points or attract media attention.
