The results of elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) delivered a split mandate. Both Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena secured similar number of seats – with Shiv Sena bagging 84 and Bharatiya Janata Party getting 82, while none of them close to the majority mark. No party was in a position to form a mayor of its own.
The suspense was increasing and politics was getting interesting. There were many rumours doing the round that Shiv Sena might go with Congress to form a government. However, it is confirmed now that BJP has decided to support Shiv Sena in the government. The mayor will be of Shiv Sena and the two parties will form an alliance in the BMC. Subramanian Swamy tweeted and confirmed this development. “I am so pleased that Maharashtra BJP has decided to support Shiv Sena in the Mumbai Corporation. Hindutva ekta jai ho,” Swamy tweeted a few minutes back.

Earlier, BJP Maharashtra unit had refrained from supporting Shiv Sena because of Sena’s consistent unpalatable comments against the Prime Minister and articles opposing NDA central government, of which Shiv Sena is also an ally, in its magazine Saamna. However, it is said that many senior cabinet ministers such as Gadkari and Rajnath Singh expressed their desire that the two saffron parties should come together. And in a big boost to Hindu unity, both the parties are now together. It seems the deal has been that BJP will support Shiv Sena for its mayor candidate, and in turn Saamna will have to tone down its remarks critical of BJP government ! A win-win for both the parties, and of course, the people of Mumbai who gave them 166 seats combined.
