Serious corruption allegations have been levelled against Lalu Prasad’s son Tejashwi Yadav. The RJD has however made it clear that deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav would not resign from CM Nitish Kumar’s cabinet.
An FIR has been lodged against Tejashwi Yadav for amassing ‘benami’ properties in Delhi and Patna. But the RJD is brazenly defending him. “Tejashwi’s resignation is a hypothetical question. In fact, legislators appreciated the good work done by him in the last year-and-a-half,” said RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui.
This brewing controversy has definitely put Nitish Kumar in a tight spot. His government will fall apart if he breaks his alliance with Lalu, and if he doesn’t take strict action against Lalu’s son, his reputation will take a huge dent.
It has come to be known that Nitish Kumar has given RJD an ultimatum of four days to decide on Tejashwi Yadav. He had called a meeting of JDU MPs, MLAs and other office-bearers to discuss the CBI raids on Lalu Prasad and his family.
It is believed that Nitish told the legislators that he has always adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. He also mentioned to his party members that had this happened within his party, he would have acted by now. Although, this isn’t a sufficient enough explanation for his reticence on the matter.
Nitish Kumar told party MLAs that the RJD has to take a call on Tejashwi Yadav’s resignation in four days’ time.According to Nitish, Tejashwi should explain his position or issue a clarification regarding the allegations of corruption levelled against him.
The BJP has been quick to pounce onto this golden opportunity. The party has demanded that Nitish Kumar sack Tejashwi Yadav. It has also offered support to JDU if it exits the Grand Alliance. State BJP president Nityanand Rai said that his MLAs would lend outside support to the Nitish Kumar government.
The RJD is as expected accusing the BJP of playing political vendetta. But the corruption scandals of Lalu Prasad himself are no secret. BJP leader Sushil Modi has also accused the Congress of supporting the corrupt. Bihar politics has just gotten extremely fascinating, and from the looks of it, Nitish Kumar might just be tilting towards the BJP.
