Breaking : No tolerance towards corruption, Sports Ministry suspends IOA for appointing Kalmadi and Chautala

After Indian Olympics Association (IOA) appointed Commonwealth games scam tainted Suresh Kalmadi and corruption accused Abhay Singh Chautala as the life presidents of the organisation, sports ministry had sent a show-cause notice to IOA on Wednesday, asking it to reply by Friday 5 pm.  IOA failed to reply to the showcause notice sent to it by the Sports Ministry, the deadline of which ended at 5 pm on Friday. The IOA had sought 15 days time from the sports ministry giving an excuse that IOA president N Ramachandran is out of the country. Cracking a whip on the organisation, sports ministry has finally suspended the Indian Olympic Association till the organisation removes Kalmadi and Chautala from the post of life president.

The government can not approve of wrong things. The show-cause notice issued to the Indian Olympic Association was a serious one but they didn’t respond and instead sought 15 days time. So the government has decided to suspend IOA till the time they withdraw the appointments. The IOA now can not take any financial assistance, facilities and privileges from the government till the time they are suspended,” sports minister Vijay Goel said on the issue. After the suspension, Indian Olympic Association will cease to enjoy the privileges bestowed on it by the government as the National Olympic Committee (NOC).

Sports minister Shri Vijay Goel also tweeted the decision to suspend Indian Olympic Association. “Govt. has suspended the deemed recognition, granted by it to Indian Olympic Association until IOA reverses its decision #Kalmadi #Chautala”, the tweet read. He also said that sports bodies cannot operate like private entities as they are accountable to the public and to the nation.

Talking to the reports, Shri Vijay Goel said, “This is a serious violation of the norms of good governance by IOA which is the mother sports body and corrective action needs to be taken immediately as it is a matter of national prestige and public sentiments. Although the government has utmost respect for the Olympic Charter and is committed to protecting the autonomy of sports, it cannot remain a mute spectator to blatant violation of principles of ethic and good governance by IOA, thereby putting the image and prestige of the country at stake. By appointing chargesheeted persons the IOA has flouted all rules and regulations mentioned in its own Constitution and that of International Olympic Committee. The government stands for good governance, principles of ethics and the implementation of National Sports Code.

Earlier, Narinder Batra, associate Vice President of the IOA, resigned from his post in protest against the appointment of Kalmadi and Chautala as life presidents of the organisation.
