Cricket fever! India vs Pakistan, 5 Hard fought contests from the past

Every cricket fan is eagerly awaiting the highly anticipated India- Pak clash at the champions trophy. While Pakistan boasts of a better head to head record  at the Champions Trophy, we’ve deprived them of a World Cup success against us. Luckily they won’t be humming the ‘Mauka-Mauka.’ India-Pakistan games are high on adrenaline. This is probably the one factor that leads to soaring TRPs.

The timing is perfect. It’s a dormant Sunday, that’ll suddenly hit super-active mode at 3 pm. Let’s look back at some of the epic clashes that define the intense, on-field rivalry.

Javed Miandad’s last ball six, Sharjah 1986

Pakistan have an abysmal record against India at the World cups. But since this was a lesser known tournament, they managed to pull off a heist. Miandad struck a last ball 6, when 4 was needed of the last ball. The Indian bowler, Chetan Sharma (the first bowler to bag a World Cup hattrick) delivered a waist-high full toss which was sent over the ropes. Rest is History (Not the history that is taught in Pak)

Venky Prasad gives Aamir Sohail a return gift

Big stage, bigger players. It was the quarterfinal of the 1996 World Cup. Pakistan were chasing 288. Aamir Sohail was in a punishing mood and had smashed almost every Indian bowler on that day. The prediction was against the Indians. Sohail provoked Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad when he asked him to fetch the ball, after hitting him for a boundary. Prasad was keen on returning the compliment. He bowled Aamir off the very next ball. The Chinnaswamy erupted, Venky Prasad had just given India the momentum. After Sohail’s exit, Pakistan collapsed. India had snatched another famous victory against their bitter rivals.

Sachin on both the ends, 2003 World Cup

Sachin Tendulkar is the GOAT. At his best, he treated his opponents like goats (bakras) I mean. Pakistan probably had the best pace attack in the world. Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis & Shoaib Akthar had all the pace.

Tendulkar was seen in the most destructive avatar. India was chasing 274 & Sachin was opening with his ‘twin’ brother Sehwag. Both the batsman got India off to a flier. Words were exchanged between Sehwag & Akthar. Sehwag had told Akthar to try the bouncer trick with his ‘baap’ (sachin) at the other end.

Sachin attacked Akthar and went after him. One humongous six and many big shots followed. Sachin was unfortunate to miss out on a well deserved hundred. But the destructive twins had ensured that India would not go back without touching the victory line.

India wins World T-20 title, Durban

It was the final of the first t-20 world cup final. India scored 157 , thanks to a half-century from Robin Uthappa. Dhoni & Irfan Pathan chipped in with useful contributions of 33 & 20. Misbah Ul haq anchored Pakistan’s chase, but not every cricketer is a finisher. Captain Cool MS Dhoni lifted the trophy for the very first time. A new star arrived.

2016 World T 20 clash against Pakistan

India were chasing, but the team was playing without the big 5. Virat Kohli & MS Dhoni stepped up & ensured that India sailed through. India maintained its perfect track record against Pakistan at the World Cups, but what will be remembered is Kohli’s special gesture. India’s next-gen batsman bowed down to Sachin Tendulkar after getting to his 50. Sachin had come to see the match & the 67000 fans in the stadium couldn’t have asked for anything better.

The Sultan of Multan, Virender Sehwag has already asked his ‘favorite’ bowler, Shoaib Akthar to be prepared with the Radio sets. What else can they show their frustration on.

Not taking anything for granted. Want India to win at any cost, emotions are at stake.

Let any Indian be the star, we want to hit a Chauka on this Mauka.
