In a shocking incident, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, Anil Parihar and his brother Ajit Parihar have been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Kishtwar district on November 1st. The motive and killers are unknown and the police have launched an investigation into the incident. Senior police officer Dilbagh Singh said “We are trying to find out the identity of the killers”.
While Anil Parihar died on the spot, his brother Ajit Parihar succumbed to his injuries later on. It should be noted that Kishtwar district is located in the Jammu region of the state and it is Jammu where BJP holds a strong presence.
This double murder took place when the two BJP leaders were returning from their shop around 8 pm. As it was dark, the assailants shot at the duo from close range and fled away. Immediately, they both were taken to the hospital but the doctors declared them brought dead. Officials said “the attackers were apparently waiting for the brothers to return home and used pistols to target them”.
Fearing unrest could trigger, the security forces are on high alert in the region and even curfew has been imposed. This heinous act has taken place days after the BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 312 wards in all the 22 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. This included 76 wards, which were won uncontested by BJP candidates in the valley.
Condemning the act, BJP President Amit Shah said “Just got the tragic news of killing of Shri Anil Parihar, Secretary (Jammu and Kashmir BJP), and his brother by terrorists in Kishtwar. This is a cowardly act that shames humanity. I grieve the death of my valued colleague and pray that God gives his family strength to bear this untimely loss”.
In the recent days the attack on BJP leaders have increased in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Last year 30-year-old Gowhar Ahmed Bhat, who was the president of the BJP’s youth wing, the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha was killed by the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district. Gowhar Ahmed Bhat, who was a resident of Bongam area in Shopian was found dead in an orchard in Kiloora with his throat slit.
In August 2018, another BJP worker Shabir Ahmad Bhat was kidnapped and then shot dead by the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Note that this was the first murder that took place after the government announced municipal and panchayat elections in state of Jammu and Kashmir.
