Denmark is a democratic country. The country is a Christian dominated could try which calls itself liberal. With such credentials, it is necessary to take few decisions with the interest of the country and national security. Denmark has now banned the use of hijab which covers full faces of women in public. “Anyone who wears a garment that hides the face in public will be punished with a fine,” says the law, which was passed by 75 votes to 30 in the Danish parliament.
The law was presented by the centre-right government, the legislation was also backed by the Social Democrats and the far-right Danish People’s Party. The government said the new rule will be effective from August 1.
According to the law, wearing a burqa, which covers a person’s entire face, or the niqab, which only shows the eyes, in public will be fined 1,000 kroner (€134). The law also bans people from wearing any accessories that hide the face such as balaclavas and false beards. The first time offender will be fined 1000 Kroner, repeated violations will be fined up to 10,000 Kroner informed government sources. Justice Minister Soren Pape Poulsen said we do not know how many women wear the niqab and burqa in Denmark.
“I don’t think there are many who wear the burqa here in Denmark. But if you do, you should be punished with a fine,” was quoted as saying by Ritzau news agency in February. Amnesty International condemned the law as a “discriminatory violation of women’s rights”, especially against Muslim women who choose to wear the full-face veils. http://www.thejournal.ie/denmark-burqa-banned-4047357-May2018/
Whilst some specific restrictions on the wearing of full-face veils for the purposes of public safety may be legitimate, this blanket ban is neither necessary nor proportionate and violates the rights to freedom of expression and religion,” the organisation’s Europe director Gauri van Gulik said in a statement following the vote.
Though the country is a democratic nation, they have full powers to take any decisions. If the same decision is taken in India, then the entire minority population would call us intolerant and brand the country communal. They would go to an extent of abusing Hindus who are majority and would call it a Hindutva agenda.
Those people who call India intolerant and anti-secular, anti-minority should now realise how the so-called liberals countries of the world implement rules and how much freedom they have in India.
