“Durga”, this is what former Prime Minister and the BJP former chief, Atal Bihari Vajpayee called Indira Gandhi.
Really!? Yes, according to the media reports, Vajapayee had called her Durga when she dared to fight for Bangladesh despite the repressions from USA. Many Congress leaders like Mr. Motilal Vohra also claim that Vajapayee has called her “Durga”.
It is natural for media to sensationalise if a politician gives such a statement, that too when he belongs to an opposition party. But, Vajapayee has never said it and still the media sensationalised it as a big news!
Vajapayee himself agrees in a television interview where he says that he had to spend more energy in disapproving the news as he had never called her so. He adds that, for media, he calling her Durga was a hot news and not his disapproval and hence his clarification of the issue was published in a corner of the newspaper whereas the untold statement still remained in the front page!
If I have to compare this with the present time, recently a media house published fake news about drastic increase in Google search for “˜caste of P V Sindhu”™ as she won silver medal in the recent Olympics. This fake news went viral and so many other reputed media houses too published the same news. But Postcard had dissected the truth behind the Google statistics and showed to the world that how media wanted to take a mileage for no reason! Similarly, the wrong accusations on former PM Vajapayee are still continuing and it is the time for us to tell the truth to the world.
Another accusation on Vajapayee was that he was critical about the present Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, after the incident of communal riots of 2002. The television channels showed a press conference of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapayee and the then CM Narendra Modi, where it was shown that Vaapayee advised Narendra Modi to follow “˜Rajadharm”™. Vajapayee was telling about Rajadharm as a part of his statement but it was not shown completely. When we watch the whole statement, he explained that it is important for every law maker or a politician to follow it and he also said that he is also practising it. He continued to say that he was confident that even the then CM Narendra Modi was also following it. But this second half was intelligently hidden and the media went on to show in such a way that Vajapayee was convinced that Narendra Modi was not following Rajadharm and he advised him to follow it. This half shown video also raised the doubts among many people about soared relationship between Vajapayee and Narendra bhai which was not true.
It is important for us to look into the truths of the whole issues and not simply believe in the sensational news that comes out of media. Media works for its own benefits and not for the people”™s benefit. That is where there is a need of efforts like Postcard to throw light on the realities and dissect the lies shown by media.
