In the 1980s, India became a major military power due to this great personality’s contribution. In 1998, the USA was stunned after how India executed its secret mission i.e. Pokhran-II explosions and when this historic event took place, the chief of the DRDO was none other than APJ Abdul Kalam.
But now a report has said that the school where former President APJ Abdul Kalam began his education has gone without electricity for the past two days with supply being snapped owing to non-payment of consumption charges.
The officials from the education department said that the Power supply to the Mandapam Panchayat Union Middle School (No.1) was disconnected by the electricity department as the local body had not paid bill dues for over two years. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam had studied in this school for his elementary education.
What was the amount of the electricity bill?
The Panchayat Union had to pay arrears to the tune of Rs 10,500 per year which had accumulated for over two years and hence they were forced to disconnect supply. But the Panchayat Union officials said that the dues will be paid immediately so that the power supply would resume.
This is not the first time, as such kind of incidents had taken place 2 years ago also. The school were the “Missile Man” studied is in darkness but Dr Kalam has electrified India’s science sector.
What are the major achievements of Dr Kalam? Why is he called the “Missile Man”?
- After specialising in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology, Kalam joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He was also the Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development from July 1992 to December 1999.
- Dr Kalam had spent his four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts.
- Due to missile pioneer in the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology, Dr Kalam came to be renowned in India and worldwide as the “Missile Man”.
What is Pokhran-II?
Pokhran-II was the series of five nuclear bomb test explosions. It consisted of five detonations, of which the first was a fusion bomb and the remaining four were fission bombs. With Pokhran range full of Army soldiers, even the scientists had to wear camouflage combat dress. This was done to help them move around without issues and not stand out and attract attention.
The United States of America’s CIA officials revealed that they did not know anything about the tests until the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced about the tests on television, hours after the mission. This was a major embarrassment to the USA because until then, the world was in a deception that the entire world’s activity was monitored by the USA. But India proved that it was a myth. The credit goes to the “Missile Man” Dr Kalam.
