The editor-in-chief of “Tehelka” who shot to lime light for his sensational string operations targeting a particular party is now stepping towards spending his rest of the life in jail for not following a very basic rule. Even though he claimed of exposing corrupts, he didn’t know to the basic rule of respecting a woman. He had sexually assualted a female colleague inside a lift at Hotel Grand Hyatt during an event organised by the Tehelka magazine in Goa.
Tarun Tejpal is the first person to be booked under India’s new rape laws. The new laws had come into force after the Nirbhaya rape case. The Goa Court, today, framed charges against him. The judges have asked Tejpal to file a plea in the court. The copy of the charges framed has been handed over to Tarun Tejpal, reported the Republic TV. The next date of hearing in the case has been scheduled for November 21.
Seculars and liberals’ favourite; But booked under bundle of sections!!!
The charges against him are 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment), 354-b (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to disrobe), 341 and 342 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 376 (rape), 376C (sexual intercourse by person in authority), 376(2)(f) (person in position of trust or authority over women, committing rape of such women) and 376(2) (k) (rape of a woman by a person being in position of control or dominance over the woman).
His friends in media describe him as a fearless journalist, publisher, novelist and former editor-in-chief of Tehelka magazine. But this fierce journalist had allegedly raped his junior colleague who was of his daughter’s age. This was revealed in the email chat but he said that this was a “momentary lapse of judgement”. But he had threatened the victim that “complying to his lecherousness was the easiest way to keep her job”.
In 2004, backed by more than 200 writers, lawyers, business people and activists, who donated money and supported it, Tehelka launched itself as a reader-financed weekly newspaper in tabloid format. Among the supporters were activist Arundhati Roy and Shashi Taroor. Now you may know why majority of Tarun Tejpal’s sting operations were against BJP.
