One cannot deny the fact that Gujarat is deeply missing the strong leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Anandiben Patel, who was the first woman chief minister in Gujarat couldn’t impress the Gujaratis. Later, she was succeeded by Vijay Raupani, yet the state missed the charm of PM Modi.
Even though Mr Vijay Rupani won with over 25000 votes, BJP is not sure of electing him as the Chief Minister. Now, talks are emerging that Smriti Irani is leading the race of becoming the next chief minister of Gujarat. Textiles and I&B minister Smriti Irani is well versed in Gujarati and she has, in the past, gained the trust of PM Modi with her performance.
Even though the seat shares of BJP had dipped in Gujarat, the vote share hasn’t come down. This indicates that Gujaratis are still with the BJP. So to ensure that the people’s expectations are met, the state needs a strong leader and Smriti Irani can handle this responsibility.
How had Smriti Irani ripped apart top senior leaders single-handedly, in the past?
- Recently, when senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said that Kashmiris need ‘Azadi’. But Minister Smriti Irani responded saying “I think it is quite shocking and disgusting that P Chidambaram today speaks about breaking the Union of India into pieces. Though I am not surprised because Mr Chidambaram reflects the Congress mentality”.
- Rahul Gandhi had mocked India in University of California in Berkeley saying India is run by dynasty. But Smriti Irani called Rahul Gandhi as a failed politicians and responded saying “A failed dynast today chose to speak about his failed political journey in the US… The country (India) is not listening (to him) so he is speaking somewhere else. The fact that Rahul Gandhi chose to belittle the prime minister is not a surprise but expected… It is an indication of his failed strategy”.
- When anti-national slogans were raised in JNU, Smriti Irani condemned not just Kanhaiyya Kumar and gang, but all those who supported those ‘Azadi’ gang.
- “The entire country had witnessed how Rahul Gandhi rushed to extend his support to those who chanted Bharat tere tukde honge (India you will be broken into pieces) in Delhi. Since this is the land of Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi, I want to know if this land (Gujarat) will support Rahul (in the polls)”, she said in one of her rallies in Gujarat. The crowd in that rally had responded to her, saying they will not support Rahul Gandhi and team. As expected, people slammed the Congress for the 6th time in Gujarat.
This symbolises that she can take on any heavyweight or pseudo heavyweights in the Indian politics.
We had seen that how women are respected in PM Modi’s cabinet. Sushma Swaraj has performed extraordinarily as an external affairs minister. No matter in which corner of the world the Indians are suffering, she had plunged to rescue them.
Another woman who has been leading in PM Modi’s cabinet is Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Soon after assuming the office, she had signed billion dollars of defence projects. The Chinese were also stunned by her fearless interaction with the Chinese soldiers couple of months ago.
This proves that the government which promoted ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’ trusts women to great extent. So, there is nothing to be surprised if Textiles and I&B minister Smriti Irani becomes the next chief minister of Gujarat. Although, Smriti Irani has denied this speculation saying “I am definitely not a contender”.
Apart from Vijay Rupani and Smriti Irani, Union minister of state for road transport & highways and shipping Mansukh L Mandaviya is the second favourite candidate for CM. A Patidar from Saurashtra, Mandaviya is counted among leaders who are close to farmers, reported India Today.
