Game over ? Sasikala and her nephew Dhinakaran kicked out of AIADMK

In an interesting development, the game for V.K. Sasikala and her nephew Dhinakaran seem to be over. Twenty ministers of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu in a joint statement today, said “a committee, and not a family will henceforth run the party.” Finance minister of Tamil Nadu D. Jayakumar said that the party needs to be united and is looking forward to merger with the O.Panneerselvam faction, whose demands have been the ouster of Sasikala and her relatives from the party. Panneerselvam had earlier made it clear that he would not settle for anything less than removal of Sasikala and her nephew T Dhinakaran from AIADMK.

Interestingly, this development of Sasikala and Dhinakaran’s ouster from the party has happened after Income Tax department raided more than 50 locations belonging to various ministers of Tamil Nadu government and secured evidences against them. According to a report in the Economic Times, at least four ministers are suspected to be involved in illegal cash transactions, following the demonetisation drive. The income-tax department has searched residences and business establishments of Sekhar Reddy, Ilangovan and Chandrakant Ramalingam in Chennai, Bangalore and Erode. In these raids conducted by Income Tax department, about Rs 152 crore worth of demonetised currency was seized.

The Income Tax department has stepped up its investigation of corruption cases against Sasikala, her family members and loyalists. It is believed that the evidence obtained from health minister Vijaya Bhaskar’s associates and cases against Sasikala’s nephew Dhinakaran include cash for votes and attempt to bribe EC. All these cases make his arrest inevitable. The IT department has said that they already have a rough estimate on the extent of income and properties owned by Sasikala and her loyalists, who used money and power to capture the party.

However, the ministers of Tamil Nadu government and members of AIADMK have now spoken up to make the party free from the control of Sasikala and her family members, who have various cases of corruption and irregularities against them. Sasikala has already been convicted of mega corruption cases and is currently lodged in Bengaluru jail. It is time that AIADMK becomes a democratic party, and doesn’t slip into control of Sasikala’s family, who usurped power unethically.
