Today is the historical day when the world’s first ever Psychiatrist counseled the most depressed man on earth to perform the toughest duty of Kshatriya warrior for the Establishment of Justice and Truth. Yes, today is Geeta Jayanti, the Fortunate day for the mankind to be blessed with SrimadBhagawatGeeta! Though written some 5000 years back, Bhagavadgita is relevant of all times and applicable to all ages. It is a Treasure of Enlightenment that guides you to a happy and meaningful life in this lifetime and beyond it! This Timeless Scripture is abundant with rich knowledge that will remove all doubts, dilemmas, disappointments and distress of life! To put it in a nutshell, Geeta is the ONLY hope for today’s miserable mankind lost in momentary and materialistic achievements.
It’s an irony of our nation that we are the dumbest of people who are ignorant of their own rich possessions! While the whole world is exploring the riches of Bhagwadgita , people belonging to the very pious land of its origin are totally ignorant of it! Krishna stood here Himself out of His selfless love to guide all the helpless and lost souls symbolizing Arjuna. Unfortunately, our enemies, be it Mughals or British, located our strength and targeted to destroy our knowledgeable scriptures. Post Independence, the pseudo- liberals took over the responsibility to further perish the flow of Knowledge. Today they ask whether reading Bhagawadgita will feed the hungry stomach! These enemies of mankind have killed the thirst of knowledge, degrading humans to the level of animals!
Why is SrimadBhagawadGita considered as the Solution to all human problems? What is the Central Theme of Geeta? What are the varied topics elaborated in Geeta? But before going in depth of it, let’s analyze the main problems of humankind. Well, they are plenty! Our minds are infected with the diseases like anger, ego, jealousy, hatred, fear of separation, inadequacy, grudge, lust and so on! These psychological diseases stay hidden inside the minds of people manufacturing unhappiness as its side product. Then there are some other kinds of people, who are spiritually inclined and seek knowledge about themselves…what are they… who are they…. where did they come from…. where will they go from here… what is the meaning of their being! The Solution to the unhappiness of the ignorant people and knowledge-seeking ones is one and the same, Bhagwadgita!
Arjuna is the symbol of ignorance of the soul. All his bodily strength gets drained when the fear of separation of near and dear ones hits him. The courage of Dhanajay collapses when faced the way to the fulfillment of his duty that goes through the murders of one’s own! Likewise, a jeeva cannot stick to the righteous path if it crosses the loss of beloved people. If Arjuna was fortunate to get a Counselor like Krishna, we are equally lucky to have a Bhagwadgita in our hands, a compilation of all the counseling advices of Krishna to Arjuna!
Geetha discusses many topics dealing with spirituality, like the topics of Karma, Yoga, Devotion, Knowledge, Values, Pranayama, Meditation, moderation in food, social Harmony etc. But as the soul furthers on the path of Knowledge practicing all the advices of Geeta, it becomes a Moksha Grantha , a Scripture for Salvation for them.
In the very own words of Lord Sri Krishna about the eternity of soul beyond the materialistic body…
“A wise person does not grieve in life”. This is a beautiful statement of Lord Krishna worth remembering in life. The soul is the essence of Life, not the body. Those who are born are bound to die. But the soul is eternal. Death is not an end, but just a respite in the eternal journey of soul. During this journey, the soul changes different bodies as the vehicles of their journey. After the birth, the body goes through many phases like childhood, youth, old age and death. After the death of the body, soul gets another one to further on the journey. Thus, the soul discards the old body and enters the new one, just like we throw away the old clothes and wear the new one.
Thus, Krishna removes the fear of separation from the mind of Arjuna, that the death of his beloved Bheeshmacharya, Dronacharya and Kripacharya is not going to be the death of those souls.
For strengthening Arjuna’s conviction about the eternity of souls, Krishna says,
Weapon cannot cut the souls, Fire cannot burn it, Water cannot dissolve it and Wind cannot dry it up! Soul is above all these harms and is eternal.
Krishna counsels about the attitude while performing any duty. Krishna advises Arjuna to treat alike Happiness and Sorrow, Gain and Loss, Victory and Defeat while engaging himself in the battle. All these extremes are temporary and don’t matter in the long journey of souls. This attitude empowers the soul to go through all the ups and downs of life unaffectedly.
Krishna further enlightens Arjuna about Karma Yoga.
The battle of Kurukshetra is between Truth and Untruth, justice and injustice. Krishna advises Arjuna to perform duty being a Kshatriya irrespective of the result. One must fulfill one’s duty as a duty towards society. The action in itself must be considered as a reward. But when one performs duties with some selfish motive, it is bound to cause misery. Hence, one must walk along the path of selfless Action. The reward for one’s action is not in one’s hands. Hence one must do one’s duty without expecting results. Expectations raise hopes and their failures cause disappointment.
Those who have constant and strong conviction in the Supreme Power of the Universe, Lord Sri Krishna , He promises to protect them from all vices and bless them with the eternal complete happiness of Moksha.
Krishna’s Assurance to the Humankind:
“Whenever virtue subsides and wickedness prevails, I manifest Myself. To establish virtue, to destroy evil, to save the good I come from Yuga (age) to Yuga.”
Bhagawad Gita is the Ocean of Knowledge that equips you to sail through the Samsara Samudra, through this birth and beyond it! Thanks to Iskcon, this treasure of Bharat is increasing multifold by its globalization, helping numerous suffering souls. Being Indians, let’s pledge to relish at least a drop of this Ocean of Knowledge for our own betterment. Let’s also appeal to the Education Ministry to make Bhagawadgita a compulsory subject in the schools. Geeta isn’t limited to any one particular religion, caste or creed. It is the Universal Guide to Knowledge. Let our children reap the benefits of our rich heritage at the impressible age.
Jai Sri Krishna!
