The Aam Aadmi Party has declared Elvis Gomes as its chief ministerial candidate. The announcement was made at a rally at Cuncolim by the AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The 53-year-old bureaucrat Elvis Gomes had taken voluntary retirement to join AAP. Elvis Gomes was IG Prisons and Urban Development Secretary when he quit service. Currently, he is working as the elected President of Goa Football Association.
Elvis Gomes and former Indian National Congress MLA/Goa Tourism minister Nilkant Halarnkar were booked by ACB in connection with a scam between 2007 and 2011, involving 30,000 square metres of land in Margao town. The matter relates to the time when Halarnkar was the Chairman of Goa Housing Board and Gomes was its Managing Director. According to the ACB, they allegedly acquired a land, changed its zoning (purpose of usage) to residential, which would increase the land’s market value and gave it back to the owner. The Board acquired the land for building residential units and allegedly got its zoning changed from ‘orchard’ to ‘settlement’.
The nature of corruption of which Gomes has been charged of is exactly similar to the corruption charges of which Robert Vadra is accused of. If there is such a major corruption charge against someone, how revolutionary is it to declare the person as the Chief Minister candidate of a party which calls itself “the most honest” party ? Aam Aadmi Party and Arvind Kejriwal has appointed Elvis Gomes as the CM candidate who has serious corruption charges and ACB is probing him. Arvind Kejriwal, who asks for resignation, even for false allegations has finally appointed a CM candidate with cases of corruption. Truly as Kejriwal says, “Hum Raajneeti badalne aaye hain ji ! Hum imaandaar raajneeti karne aaye hain.”
