How did Naveen Patnaik manage to survive the “Modi Wave” even though the Grand Alliance crumbled to it?

The 2019 Lok Sabha elections had proved that PM Modi is a larger than life figure. Wherever the BJP had a substantial base, it managed to totally demolish its political rivals. As a result, the Congress party failed to win even a single seat in 18 states and union territories.

Across the nation, there was a strong Modi wave but you will be surprised to know that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to grab the majority of the seats in both assembly and parliament elections in Odisha. That too even after Naveen Patnaik’s BJD was ruling the state since past two decades.

In Odisha, the assembly and the parliamentary elections were held simultaneously and interestingly Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) scored an upper hand in both. Yes, the BJD won 112 seats out of the 147 assembly house. Whereas BJP increased its performance and won 23 seats whereas the Congress won only 9 seats. Even in the Lok Sabha polls, BJD won 12 seats and the BJP win 9 seats.

Looking at the Lok Sabha seats, one can say that the people of Odisha wanted to see PM Modi in centre once again. But when it came to their states, the people didn’t want to let go Naveen Patnaik. This poses the question, “Whey the people of Odisha are with Naveen Patnaik even after 20 years of governance?”

Now let us analyse why Naveen Patnaik’s BJD overtook PM Modi’s BJP in Odisha.

Ever since the idea of grand alliance took place, several Modi-hating leaders tried to lure Naveen Patnaik to join them, but he kept equal distance from them. But the stake holders in grand alliance, in a bid to attack PM Modi, started attacking all the government authorities including the Indian Army.

But Naveen Patnaik never followed such tactics. When the Indian Air Force demolished Balakot terror training camps to avenge the Pulwama attack after PM Modi gave a free hand, Naveen Patnaik joined the celebration by backing the Indian Air Force. Yes, when it came to protecting national interests, he never shied away from supporting PM Modi’s decisions.

When PM Modi introduced Ayushman Bharat, several non-BJP states like Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal didn’t co-operate. But Odisha government never followed such tactics.

Recently when Odisha was hit by Fani cyclone, the way Naveen Patnaik and PM Modi worked together was praise worthy. But Mamata Banerjee showed her arrogance by not responding to the call of Prime Minister’s office when the centre was eagerly waiting to help the cyclone effected people.

In West Bengal, after BJP demolished the citadel of TMC, we had seen how the defeated TMC goons killed nearly a dozen of BJP karayakarthas. But did to you see even a single BJP karyakathaa abusing or attacking BJD workers or Naveen Patnaik after their defeat in the state? Answer is no.

Naveen Patnaik fought elections in true spirits, just like PM Modi. Mr Patnaik, in an attempt to suppress the rise of PM Modi, never attacked or abused PM Modi or his family. But Congress and grand alliance followed all types of dirty tactics.

By now it is clear why BJD managed to survive the Modi wave in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
