Putting an end to the problem faced by transgenders while booking or canceling a railway ticket, IRCTC and Indian Railways have finally decided to include the Transgenders as third gender on reservation and cancellation forms. This facility will be available for both online booking of tickets through IRCTC as well as tickets booked from the counters of Indian Railways.
A statement from the Ministry of Railways said, “Supreme Court (in the judgement) has directed that Hijras, Eunuchs, apart from binary gender, be treated as third gender for the purpose of safeguarding their rights under Part III of our Constitution and the laws made by the parliament and the State Legislature. It has, therefore, been decided to include the third gender/transgender option alongside male/female in reservation /cancellation requisition form. This information will be captured by the system and tickets to transgenders.”
This is an extremely progressive step made by the Ministry of Railways and IRCTC which will help the transgenders to book reserve tickets. Earlier, since there were options of Male/Female on a reservation form, it was nearly impossible for the transgenders to book reserved tickets. This move will go a long way in providing facilities to the transgenders. It’s time that other ministries and departments also follow the steps of Railways and provide equal opportunities to the transgender.
