Even though the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee didn’t have enemies, he couldn’t escape from the abuses of the then Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Before discussing on the kind of abuses of Sonia Gandhi, let us have a look at the kind of hatred she had towards Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
It was the time when the entire nation was rejoicing and the reason was indeed massive. India had successfully tested the series of five nuclear bomb explosions at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in May 1998. This test was the need of the hour.
With neighbors like China and Pakistan who were eager to grab Indian territory and with few of the global super power nations inclined towards Pakistan, there had arised a situation that India had to stand on its own. That’s when the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee decided to make India a nuclear nation.
After the news broke out that India had successfully test fired the nuclear missiles, shivers were sent down the spines of India’s enemies, including the secret service agency of USA. But Sonia Gandhi, who said she will die in India, didn’t even utter a single word of praise.
It took her 10 days to give a statement on the historic Pokhran blast only to slam it. Yes, Sonia Gandhi came out and said “Real strength lies in restraint, not in the display of shakti“. The 1998 Pokhran-II blast was also known as “Operation Shakti”. But Sonia Gandhi said there was no need to display Shakti (Operation Shakti).
This was one such instance of Sonia Gandhi’s hatred towards the “Ajatashatru” (one who has no enemies). Just to demean her rivals, Sonia Gandhi didn’t even hesitate to play with national interest. But the statement made by former CIA director George Tenet makes it clear that the Pokhran blast was the biggest ever achievement of India.
Mr Tenet had said “the CIA didn’t have a clue about the nuke test. Talking about former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s decision to go ahead for the Pokhran II nuclear tests. We did not sufficiently expect that Indian politicians might do what they had openly promised – conduct a nuclear test, as the incoming ruling party had said it would”.
Now let us talk about the abuses of Sonia Gandhi towards the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee:
Known as Bhishma Pitamah of the Indian politics, who respected each and every political leader irrespective of their party was a victim of Sonia Gandhi’s derogatory words. Sonia Gandhi had called Atal Bihari Vajpayee a “Gaddar” (Traitor) two decades ago.
In a rally that was held in Ujjain in the year 1999, Sonia Gandhi abused the then Prime Minister of the country by calling him a “Gaddar”. But Mr PM Narendra Modi who was the then General Secretary of the BJP condemned this condemned this statement of Sonia Gandhi and demanded a public apology.
Even in 2002, Sonia Gandhi had made a verbal assault again Atal ji stating that he lost his mental balance. She also said “BJP is a communal party and the mask of the prime minister of trying to project a secular image is totally exposed and gone”.
The day when Atal ji lost his cool:
Even though Atal Ji had mastered the art of handling every situation with calmness, he had even mastered the art of ripping apart the persons who used un-parliamentary language and Sonia Gandhi had to taste it. Known for his witty and fierce replies, Atal Ji had once bashed Sonia Gandhi saying “who the Congress was to decide the performance of the government”.
This was a response after Sonia Gandhi had said “The BJP led government has shown itself to be incompetent, insensitive, irresponsible and corrupt. It is a government that has betrayed the mandate of the people”.
Now one can conclude that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was not a light weight in Indian politics. He was the first Prime Minister from a non-Congress background to complete a full five year term and Narendra Modi
