Modernity…we Indian women usually associate this word with our counterparts in the West! And why not! We are just in awe of their attires, hairstyles and lifestyle! So much so, that we are ready to follow their footsteps by discarding our cultures and traditions! Now, who wants to be labeled as ‘old-fashioned’ by flaunting bindis, bangles, Chudidars and Saree? Who wants to be called ‘backward’ by exhibiting qualms about drinking and smoking! Like hell, we want to be “Modern”, for God’s sake!
But you know what; the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence! Modernity implies ‘Progressive Thinking’ and not just the superficial physical aspects! India has seen Women President and Prime Minister, unlike Western Countries! Would you label SmtPratibhaPatil, our Ex-President as ‘backward’ because of her bindi and pallu? In fact, women politicians in the western countries must be thinking India very progressive where women are empowered to rule in such plum positions! Ponder over it!!
While we are discussing politics, let’s compare the women politicians of the ‘Modern’ West with ‘backward’ India! As per the latest report of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) “Sexism, harassment and violence against women parliamentarians”, two third of the female politicians across the globe are subjected to humiliating ‘Sexist’ remarks by colleagues, Media and public! The audacity of Western Media to pass remarks on 70 year old Hillary Clinton’s voice, her outfits and mannerisms is astounding! Watch the video wherein the former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has exposed the sexists and misogynists in her ‘Westernized’ eastern country!
Have you ever seen Sushma Swaraj, Jayalalithaa, Mamata Banerjee or Mayawati objectified by our Media? Even our biased and paid media is scared to offend public sentiments .The fact is, our relationships with our female leaders is that of a Mother and her children! The public addresses them as ‘Amma’, ‘Didi’ and ‘Behenji’. This has helped our female politicians to grow in the field of politics on their merit! Remember how the film director Ram Gopal Verma faced the wrath of Indians unitedly on MSM and SM for his sexist remark on the Assamese Legislator Angoor lata Deka! So, just feel proud about India where our female politicians are not treated as ‘Sexual objects’.
They say movies are the mirror of the society. See where this ‘Westernization’ has brought our leading ladies! From yesteryear’s role of a Mother India, a strong-willed woman who raised her family single-handedly to the present meaningless presence of heroines as ‘Sex objects’……yes, we have come a long way in the name of ‘Modernity’!
Recall the public outrage caused by Nirbhaya’s rape among all Indians! In the USA, rapes are so commonplace that nobody bats an eyelid over them! Here in India, it’s a common practice to address an elderly women as ‘Maaji’ or Amma and young women as Didi, Behenji, Akka or Beti. We should feel proud that such addresses are in practice only in India! We can connect this pure respect for females with Hindu scriptures and teachings. All Goddesses like Lakshmi, Saraswati, Parvati etc are ‘Mothers’ to their devotees. One can’t expect such respect from the Christianized West. Their image of ‘Eve’ is that of a temptress. No wonder western women are treated as sex objects!
So, my dear Indian sisters, proudly boast that you are an Indian! There is a huge scientific background for all rituals, traditions and festivals of India. Learn about the rich heritage of our ancient scriptures! And remember that the West is the last place we should get ‘Inspired’ for progressive thinking! East or West, India is the best!!!
