One after another, major and terrible shocks are shattering the dreams of the Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka. With just 12 hours to go for the voting in the state, the Election Commission (EC) deferred polling in Karnataka’s Rajarajeswari assembly seat to May 28 after the recent seizure of fake voter cards in the constituency and the counting of votes will now be held on May 31.
“The current election process in the constituency has been vitiated on account of unlawful activities of candidates and political parties, as well as their workers in planning to allure voters through distribution of freebies and the illegal collection of electors, photo identity cards (EPIC)” this is what the poll panel said.
The Election Commission said “Every voter has freedom to cast his vote in a fair manner without facing any inducement. In this particular instance, free exercise of electoral rights has been compromised at a large scale in a systemic manner”.
Congress MLA booked, a major setback for the Congress party!
Earlier over 50000 fake voter IDs were found in an apartment of RR Nagar Constituency and the BJP had said that it belongs to the Congress MLA candidate Munirathna. This has been a setback to the Congress party as the cops booked the accused including the Congress MLA under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, under section 135A — a serious provision under which such acts of crime are akin to booth capturing.
What the BJP said on this?
The BJP had earlier demanded the Election Commission to countermand election to Raja Rajeshwari Nagar constituency in Karnataka over the seizure of more than 9,000 voter identity cards. And now it has said,
- Victory for Democracy! EC orders countermanding of RR Nagar polls after court-ordered FIR against Congress candidate Muniratna Naidu for creating more than 10k fake voter IDs. With Siddaramaiah’s money bag, Muniratna in the dock, Congress is in a big soup in Karnataka.
- Election malpractices are not new to Congress. Even Indira Gandhi was convicted and jailed on election malpractice charges. Continuing her tradition, Siddaramaiah’s Cong tried to subvert democracy in RR Nagar. Now EC has ordered countermanding elections for RR Nagar. Democracy wins
Victory for democracy, says a voter

A couple of days ago, Chief Electoral Officer Sanjeev Kumar had said “The Bengaluru Municipal corporation commissioner and three observers have been sent there to independently verify the allegations. There are 4.35 lakh voters in Raj Rajeshwari Nagar constituency. The elector to population ratio is 74.33 percent. Some people have approached- BJP, as well as JD(S), have sent representatives on the spot. 9746 cards are genuine- they are wrapped in small packets and have some addresses and names. Police is guarding the venue. Appropriate action will be taken at appropriate time. In next 24 hours, we will get to know more facts, based on which a firm decision will be taken”.
