The Kerala police have finally registered a case against former chief imam of Tholicode Jama Ath, Shafeek Al Qasimi on charges of sexually harassing a 15-year-old-girl after a delay of a week.
This incident came to light after few women spotted the Imam taking a 15-year-old girl to a secluded spot near forest at Tholicode. The group of women who were working under the Kudumbashree scheme confronted the Imam when they caught him with a minor girl.
Even after a week after this incident was brought to the notice of authorities, no action was taken. But now the Vithura police have registered a case against him under several sections including Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Note that the minor girl was the neighbour of the Imam.
When the group of women had questioned in the Imam in the deserted forest, he said that the minor girl was his wife. But later on, it was learned that he picked up the girl from her school and brought her to the lonely spot to sexually harass her.
The delay in registering the case against the Imam took place because the girl refused to give her statement against Imam Shafeek Al Qasimi and even her family backed the Imam.
Currently the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has ordered the girl to be taken to a shelter home where she will be given counseling and the Imam Qasimi has been suspended by the All India Imam’s Council.
Police officials said, “An FIR was registered as per the statement of the mosque committee and the victim or her family are yet to file a formal complaint”.
Weeks ago such kind of incident had come up where the church officials had lured a girl and had sexually assaulted her in Mangalore for months.
