In a welcome move the centre has suggested Khel Ratna award for Gymnast Dipa karmakar and shooter Jitu Rai. The 23 year old Dipa Karmakar was the first ever gymnast who represented India in women vault in Rio Olympics 2016. She put down a spectacular show for which she received appreciation from all over the country. Dipa missed the bronze medal in a mere 0.2 point difference but won the hearts of million Indians by her stunning performance in a sport which hardly got any support and relevance in the country.
Shooter Jitu Rai who qualified for the 10m air pistol event and finished 8th has also been recommended for the Khel Ratna award.
The President of India Sri Pranab Mukherjee will honour the winners on National Sports Day.
The gesture will not only encourage the sportsman to aim higher accomplishments but also be an inspiration to thousands who dream of representing India in various sports.
