It was in the year 1985, the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, returned empty handed to India after laying hands in front of America to bring super computer technology in India. He went America to demand assistance from US President Ronald Reagan. But the proud America refused to provide technology to a poorer country like India. Rajiv Gandhi again tried in 1987 but the USA once again refused to share the technology with India.
Again after all the efforts of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi went vain he struck the door of Russia. Russia decided to acknowledge India’s demand and support the nation that again United States intervened and ensured that India did not get help from Russia and be equipped with super computer technology. At that time Soviet Union had just broken down and Russia was born, America had taken control of all the independent countries, so Russia had to come under pressure from the United States.
After this IBM Company came forward to open its branch in India, but the United States put pressure on the company and said that if technology was given to India then it would be fatal to US security. Due to US pressure, IBM too stepped back. Amidst all this there was one person in India, who repeatedly convinced Rajiv Gandhi that India should not ask for help from anyone because India has enough knowledge and scientists who can make supercomputers on their own. Rajiv Gandhi did not pay heed to his saying because he felt that Indian Scientists are not capable for this!! After continually returning empty handed from the other countries finally Rajiv Gandhi agreed to that person’s point of view, that person was none other than Dr. Vijay P Bhatkar
Dr. Vijay P Bhatkar is known in India as the “Father of Super Computer”. In 1987 Dr. Bhatkar anyhow made agree the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and formed ‘Development and Advanced Computing Center’. Dr. Bhatkar started the process of making a super computer in Pune’s CDAC institution. He was given only $ 30 million from the government, which was too little to implement such a huge project. But the scientists of India did not lost courage, gave up their self-interest and riches and put full effort in the development and became successful in embarking the name of nation in golden words in history of computerization.
Within three years in 1990, Indian scientists surprised the world by making the country’s first super computer “PARAM 8000”! America and Russia got stunned after seeing the success of India. In 1998, India released “PARAM 10000”. After that India never looked back. Today, there is no such super computer in the world that can compete with the Indian computer. India is the world’s largest software supplier; Indian Scientists also working in NASA. So far, four versions of PARAM have been released.
The country is grateful to Dr. Vijay P Bhatkar who made India self-reliant in computer field with his intelligence and hard work. Don’t forget and also tell your generation that Dr. Vijay P Bhatkar is the person who provided super computer to India. In 2017, Dr. P Bhatkar, Head of RSS-Affiliated Science Body has been appointed as the Chancellor of Nalanda University by the Indian Government. Government of India has also honored him with the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. Big salute to Dr. Vijay P Bhatkar for his contribution to the nation.
