There were times where the brave police officers were suppressed with transfers but this time there is something to cheer for all of us. Yes, the cop who is popularly known as lady Singham, IPS D Roopa is awarded President’s Medal on Saturday.
The award was presented to Roopa for her meritorious service by Governor Vajubhai Vala at a ceremony at Raj Bhavan in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Previously, she was awarded with the President’s Police Medal in 2016.
Several other officers were also awarded with the President’s medal for their meritorious service. In the month of July, then DIG (Prisons) D Roopa grabbed the attention of all the Indians by exposing the irregularities that was going on in the Bangalore central Jail.
Everyone were in the deception that Sasikala was undergoing punishment for her wrong deeds but the firebrand top cop of Karnataka proved us wrong. Then DIG of prison, D Roopa alleged that Karnataka Director General of Prisons (DGP) Satyanarayana Rao took 2 crores in bribe and allotted a separate kitchen to Sasikala in Bengaluru Parappana Agrahara Central jail. Instead of appreciating this brave officer, she was targeted for exposing the crime by the Karnataka Congress government.
“There is no truth in reports suggesting that Sasikala and (her relative) Elavarasi have been given preferential treatment at the prison” these were the words of Congress government. She was later removed from her position and was transferred to Deputy Inspector General of Police and Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety. IPS D Roopa also said that even Karim Lala Telgi, who has been convicted in a fake stamp-paper scam, had been given special treatment by prison officials.
Later in the month of August, reports emerged that Sasikala and her aide were roaming near shopping complexes wearing burqas. Even several CCTV footages surfaced on social media through which it was evident that Sasikala was allowed to wear cloths of her choice instead of prison uniform.
IPS D Roopa belongs to elite officers, who secured 43rd rank in UPSC exam in 2000. She could have easily got into IAS but her love was in wearing the “Khaki uniform”. She was ranked fifth position in her batch at NPS Hyderabad and was the only officer who was allotted the Karnataka cadre. We all hope that this brave lady will reach further heights so that peace in the society will be enforced.
