The lady who forced the emergency period on India and insulted the dignity of the Indian constitution, “the iron lady” of Congress was arrested on 19th of December 1978 and kept in jail for a period of one week!
The emergency refers to a 21-month period from 1975- 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had a state of emergency declared all over the country. It was the most horrific “21 months period” gifted to us by Indira Gandhi. Only to fulfill her political greed, she tortured the people, Indians survived a tough life leading to her decision of emergency period. It was one of the darkest episodes in the pages of Indian History which was gifted to us by Indira Gandhi. Not many of us know that it was the government under Morarji Desai which arrested Indira Gandhi and captivated her for about a week inside the Tihar jail.
Soon after the Morarji Desai government came to power there aroused a demand within the party members for arresting Indira Gandhi. Though Morarji Desai was not willing to agree with this decision of his party members, as he thought the people have already punished Indira Gandhi and her government by not choosing them.
The failure of the Congress party itself was a punishment for her. In spite of this thought from Morarji Desai, it was Charan Singh who stressed on the decision of arresting Indira Gandhi and he was indeed successful in doing it. Cabinet members of Desai not just issued commission order on her but also demanded to run a case on her. At last Desai was left with no other option rather than accepting the demand of his cabinet members.
It’s not common in India for a Prime Minister to be jailed. However, the political and social scenario in the late 1970’s forced the Indian judicial system to apprehend the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on charges of “planning the killing of all opposition leaders in jail during the Emergency.”
Indira Gandhi’s arrest triggered nationwide strikes and protests. The Congress party supporters demanded her immediate release in order to stop the ongoing strikes. They even hijacked an Air India flight in protest of their leader’s arrest. In the face of such national unrest, Indira Gandhi was freed from prison on the night of 26th of December 1978, after spending one week in detention for breach of privilege and contempt of the Indian Parliament.
She was informed through the speaker about her arrest warrant. It was N.K Singh, Superintendent of Police (CBI) assigned to complete this task of arresting and taking Indira Gandhi to Tihar Jail. The first time N.K Singh arrived to arrest Indira Gandhi was when there occurred charges of political corruption on her by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the year 1977. It was not until 8’o Clock that she was ready to leave. Perhaps that was the auspicious time suggested by her pundits. But however, she was freed as the court could not gain any evidence against her.
She was kept in ward no.19 of the Tihar jail. She spent over 7 days there and daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi used to get food for her every day. This arrest of Indira Gandhi was taken well advantage over by the Congress party. They started spreading hatred against the government in the minds of people. Indira Gandhi’s arrest was given a political twist and turn trying to retain her image in the country. The Congress is well versed in this job of twist and turns even today but the difference is that people now have turned much smarter.
When Indira Gandhi won the Lok Sabha elections in the year 1980, she conspired and threw out N.K Singh from the CBI department. Later it was V.P Singh government that called back and appointed N.K Singh to the department. Congress has no limitations in any form; it can do anything under the disguise of its power. The Gandhi family that claims to respect the constitution above all has hidden the blunders done by its own family members. Now when there arises an accusation on the people of Gandhi family they allege it to be a political conspiracy. The arrest of Indira Gandhi was turned to such an attempt to gain sympathy for her in the eyes of the citizens.
If asked me, the family that conspired against the nation for 60 years , the family that misused the government funds for 60 years, the family that divided Hindus and Muslims in India, the family that sowed the seed of religious discrimination to break apart India into pieces, such a family should be awarded with life-imprisonment and not jail for a week!. What would be your opinion on this?
