Even though the Indian Armed Force was one among the world’s best`forces, it ailed when it came to procuring sophisticated weapons. But after the Modi government came to power, Armed Force is getting strengthened with several arms acquirement. What is really encouraging is that most of the weapons are manufactured under Make in India.
In a path-breaking decision, the Defence Ministry on 20th March cleared a project for the Indian Army for the acquisition of 10 lakh ‘Made in India’ multi-mode hand grenades. In a major feather in the crown for PM Modi’s ambitious Make in India initiative, these multi-mode grenades have been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and it will be manufactured by an agency in large scale. A report said “The new hand grenades will replace the existing inventory, HE-36 grenades manufactured by the Ordnance Factory Board”.
The central government is aggressively involved in the procurement of the major weapons, which are of utmost use to the Armed Force. It is said that the cost of this project will be over Rs 500 crore and this will be one of the vital decision after the purchase of lakhs of bulletproof jackets.
Last month India had received its first four of 15 Boeing Company’s Chinook helicopters, which are known for its heavy-lift capabilities.
Speaking on its speciality, Boeing said “The CH-47F (I) Chinook is an advanced multi-mission helicopter that will provide the Indian armed forces with unmatched strategic airlift capability across the full spectrum of combat and humanitarian missions. The ahead-of-schedule arrival of the Chinooks validates Boeing’s commitment to delivering on its promise of modernizing India’s defence forces”.
