Government divided Defense Manufacturing into categories mentioned below :
1. Fighter Aircraft and Helicopters
3. Armed Fighting Vehicles
4. Main Battle Tanks
These Categories are now well placed in Defense Procurement Policy and Defense Strategic Partnership.
In each category one private sector company of India and one core organisation of different country will be strategically join together to manufacture the equipment in India under Make In India. Defense PSU will also play a important part according to their capacity. Selection of private sector will be done based on Open Bidding Process.
This is huge step towards India’s bid for becoming Independent in defense.
Defense manufacturing will not only bring huge employment but it will open up a new sector of manufacturing in India which was closed since Independence and We are always dependent on foreign countries.
The government on Wednesday cleared a long-awaited policy to boost local defence manufacturing by effectively picking industry champions that would tie up with foreign players and make high-tech defence equipment, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said.
The policy, which has been under discussion for more than year, was approved by the cabinet committee of security, Jaitley told reporters.
Government and industry representatives have been under discussion over the details of the model for more than a year, delaying the launch of tens of billions of dollars worth of deals.
Indian firms Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra Group, Tata Group and recent entrants Reliance Group and Adani Group are all expected to compete fiercely to become one of four strategic partners.
Foreign manufacturers such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, BAE Systems, Airbus and Saab are looking to India as one of the biggest investors.
