Twenty-seven years ago on 19 January 1990, in the valleys of Kashmir, mosques issued open warnings that the Kashmiri Pandits males had to follow one of the 3 options – leave Kashmir, convert to Islam or get ready to be killed. Along with this, they were asked to leave the female members of the family behind in the valley. Houses of Pandits were specifically marked and warning notices were put up on the doors. What followed was one of the worst exodus of Indian history ! In the following days, more than 500,000 Kashmiri Pandits left their homes. A few who didn’t consider the warning to be serious enough and stayed in their respective homes, were mercilessly killed by the Islamists in the valley.

Journalist Aditya Raj Kaul (@AdityaRajKaul) was one of those Kashmiri Pandits whose family was forced to leave the valley. The one-way ticket that his family purchased still sends shivers down the spine.

The mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from their homeland ensued. Kashmiri Pandit women were raped and mercilessly murdered. Thousands of Kashmiri Pandits were killed, even small kids were not spared. Though the official number puts the number of murders to be less than 300, it is believed that thousands were killed as many people didn’t register cases. Temples were vandalized and completely destroyed, and even after 27 years…everyone has turned a blind eye.

However, as shameful as it can get, Barkha Dutt just puts the blame on the Pandits. In an old video while reporting for the NDTV from Kashmir valley, she is seen justifying the exodus and genocide of Kashmiri Pandits. She says, “They (Pandits) were the elite of the valleys. They may have been minority, but at that time they had monopolized government jobs, plum postings and other such social benefits.” She goes on to say that the economic divide created between these Pandits and poor Muslims led to the genocide of the Pandits. Watch this video below and see the shocking insensitive reporting of the issue, and how conveniently she brushes off the issue as one caused due to economic divide, while it is a well documented fact that the genocides were communal in nature and specifically targeted towards the Pandits.

While the so-called “intellectuals” and “seculars” take out candles in support of terrorists like Yakub & Afzal at drop of a hat, they end up hibernating when reminded about lakhs of Kashmiri Pandits who were persecuted by the Islamists of valley.
