Fascinating Mystery surrounding the 400 year old Shiva temple

Vagarthaviv Sampraktau, Vagartha Pratipataye

Jagatah Pitrau Vande Parvati Parameswarau

Lord Shiva, Aadi Yogi, Abode of the universe, Creator of the Universe, Reason for a being, I prostrate myself to you Matah, Pita (Shiva Lingaa).

As I pen down my thoughts to Lingodbhava (phallus Form) of Lord Shiva, let me traverse through divinity in fullest form of Lord Shiva in shivalinga form of 400 Years old, Sri Dakshinamukha Nandi Teertha Kalyani Kshetra.

This temple is also known as Nandi Teertha, Nandiswara Teertha, Basava Teertha or simply known as Malleswaram Nandi Gudi. The Main deity of the temple is Shiva, in the form of Shiva Linga (Lingam). It’s a small temple located in front of the Gangamma temple and also opposite to the Kadu Malleswaram temple on 2nd temple street, Malleswaram layout in Bengaluru, State of Karnataka. As we all know by name we can gauge that “Dakshina” means south in Sanskrit as well as in most Indian Languages, so also, we find in Kannada too.

Now Let me give you all why it’s known as Dakshinamukha Nandi Teertha Kalyani Kshetra—

Nandi which is vahana (vehicle) of Lord Shiva, and according to Siva Puranas It’s from Nandi’s permission, all Devataas can get into Lord Shivas Abode. What amazes me is that friends that Nandi is Positioned in Southern Direction means South facing Nandi.  We find that the water from the Nandi’s mouth falls onto the Shiva linga and flows into a stepped tank in the middle of the temple, called a “Kalyani Temple Tank in Kannada.Kshetra as we all know in Sanskrit known as Place or region of Historical or religious importance. The combination of all the above elements adds up to the official name of the temple.

Let me give you in a brief manner the historical significance of the Temple—

When I see the basic Architectural design of the Temple and the usage of rough- hewn stone pillars for the main structure, this temple can potentially pre-date the kadu Malleswara temple. We find similar rough stone pillars have been used in ancient times such as the Chandira Choodeswara Shiva Temple at Hosur.Another Historical fact that we find is that, there are no documented proof available, for the temple as such. Though it says it is7,000 years old, there are no historical evidence to it. According to Archaeological Survey of India, it is estimated as 400 years old due to Carbon dating. We also find that in some point of the history, that the Nandi Teertha temple fell into disuse and was slowly buried under mud and dirt. We find that the temple is below the ground level of the surrounding area: and there is no Gopuram tower.

However, people residing in that area where temple is, people have different stories to tell,as we all know Malleswaram in Bengaluru developed into the most preferred location to reside, since then we find property prices increased Significantly. In 1997, there was an attempt to usurp this temple area and sell it off as a vacant plot of the land. There was huge protest by the local residents, the land in question was dug up and the temple complex gradually came up from the mud and dirt. The Unique feature what we find is that the temple is essentially built as a pillared covered corridor, around a central stepped Temple tank or Kalyani. We find that Nandi is placed on a platform built above the ShivaLinga.

What is so Mysterious about Nandi Temple?

As we all now know that water flows from the mouth of Nandi and falling on Linga, which is not known i.e., to say we don’t know the exact source from where the water is gushing out of Nandi’s mouth. There are many Viewpoint on this mystery, that it can be a natural flesh water spring that emerges from under the temple and which is channelized to flow out of the mouth of Nandi.

Many others are of the view that water comes from the nearby Sankey Tank, which is situated few hundred metres away from the temple premises. If we consider the Sankey tank which was built in 1882, still Nandi temple seems to be older, so this view can be discounted too. One can say that this temple is Engineering Marvel and a classic example of Hydraulic Engineering. So, Friends I again say that Hindu Temple structures have lot of scientific basis alongwith reasoning too. As usual, like other south Indian temples we find there is a Ganesha Idol at the entrance, then there are Navagraha’s (celestial Nine Planets) abode is situated inside the temple premises.

As a Shiva Temple, all the Traditional rituals and Festivals associated with the main deity Lord Shiva is celebrated. We find that Maha shivaratiri is celebratedevery year and huge crowd come in large numbers to visit this holy shrine of Lord Shiva in Linga form, on this auspicious day.

As I come to end my article on Sri Dakshinamukha Nandi which means south facing Nandi, in the Garden city of Bengaluru, and the Mystery surrounded by a stream of water flowing through the mouth of Nandi falling above the head of Lingaa and the flows into the stepped tank knownas “Kalyani”—which is temple tank in Kannada, I feel already an urge inside me, rather divine intervention telling me to visit the Abode of Aadi yogi, abode of Lod Shiva in Lingaa (Phallus form). Shiva means Shrishtikartha, creator of the Universe, and the Pranav Mantra of Lord Shiva “OM”, relieves all sins from us. I hope whenever you hear or read about ancient Hindu Temples, I feel that we need to visit whenever there is right opportune time available to us.
