The recent “violent clash” between ABVP, the student wing of Rashtriya Swamyasevak Sangh (RSS), and leftist student groups such as AISA, SFI and DSU at Delhi University’s Ramjas College has again raised questions over the nature of discourse and level of dialogue going around student politics in India.
Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of a Kargil martyr, posted a picture on social media holding a placard with a slogan “PAKISTAN did not kill my dad, WAR killed him” social media message against violence on Delhi University campus over a literary fest at Ramjas College, has gone viral.
Gurmehar Kaur is the daughter of late Capt Mandeep Singh, who died during Kargil war.. She called the attack on students of Ramjas College by ABVP members as “brutal”, “disturbing” and “attack on Democracy”.
Kaur had launched a campaign against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad with the hashtag #StudentsAgainstABVP. On Wednesday, in a Facebook post wrote: “This profile picture is my way of protesting against the tyranny of fear. If you are a student in any Indian university, in any Indian state and you wish to protest against ABVP, then take a similar selfie and make it your profile picture. Use the hashtag #StudentsAgainstABVP and copy paste this message slogan along with it.”
The slogan says : “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP.”
The hash tag #StudentsAgainstABVP and slogans against nationalism started by her has become viral in the social media and lot of tweets, messages, posts slamming social media. Most of the social media user started making fun of her statements and hitting back with jokes, funny posts and tweets.
Reacting to her slogan former Indian cricketer Virendra Sehwag has commented , “Bat me hai Dum! #BharatJaisiJagahNahi.” And posted a picture holding placard says, “I didn’t score two triple centuries. My bat did it”. Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda also applauded Sehwag’s reply.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has joined the controversy . Minister of State for Home Affairs in Government of India, Kiren Rijiju questioned the girl’s claims that it wasn’t Pakistan but war, that killed her father. Rijiju said that India never attacked any nation but was always on the receiving end of the hatred.
He posted a tweet saying, “Who’s polluting this young girl’s mind? A strong Arm Force prevents a war. India never attacked anyone but a weak India was always invaded.”
Rijiju also pointed out that so many people take shelter in India because they know there is no better place in the world than here. “Some people say they need Freedom in India. Listen to those people taking shelter in India after facing torture in neighbouring countries,”
Kaur has faced verbal backlash on Facebook, with many saying her father would not be happy with her supporting ‘anti-nationals’. Also she should be ashamed to raise these kind of anti-national slogans being a daughter of Martyr who sacrificed his life for our nation.
But her tweets shows her love towards her martyr father who died in the line of action while serving his country. She is spoiling her father fame openly in twitter says, “Don’t call me a Martyrs daughter if that bothers you. I never claimed anything otherwise. You can call me Gurmehar.” Reacting to this tweets many saying, she is not only dishonouring her martyr father but also a brave soldier of our country.
I Request to all please don't give her too much footage ..She is just trying to be Mother of #Kanhaiya Kumar??
