PM Narendra Modi has visited several countries during his 3 year tenure at the helm of Indian affairs. The Prime Minister is making a serious effort to strengthen India’s international relations. China and Russia have said that India will become a full member of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) when PM Modi attends the summit level meeting in Kazakhstan capital Astana on June 8 & 9.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in St. Petersburg that India will formally become a member of the SCO within a week. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a Eurasian political, economic and military organisation which was founded in Shanghai in 2001 by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Russian president Vladimir Putin, Chinese president Xi Jinping and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are expected to be in Astana among other leaders from members of the SCO countries . The SCO is the world’s first military cooperation organisation. Experts say that if Pakistan attacks India after becoming a member of the SCO, it will have to do without the support of the China. Russia, China & the other 4 members of the SCO will have to take a stand against Pakistan, if they try to attack India.
PM Modi thanked Russian President Putin for his active role in getting India the SCO membership. On July 10,2015 the SCO decided to admit India & Pakistan as full members. India and Pakistan signed the Memorandum of Obligations on 24 June 2016 at Tashkent, thereby starting the formal process of joining the SCO as full members.
Any provocation from Pakistan’s side will have serious repercussions, as the other 6 member nations of the SCO will have no other option but to back India.
