He is popularly known as the first-real public face of BJP. He was the first Prime Minister of the ruling (BJP) government. His soft persona as a political leader; his poetic style; his honest efforts; all made him a popular PM. He was, and is still, considered as an important figure in native engineering of BJP- as an opposition entity.
In a series of tweets today, PM Narendra Modi wrote: “Wishing our most beloved & widely respected Atal ji a happy birthday. I pray that he is blessed with good health and a long life. Atal ji’s exemplary service & leadership has had a very positive impact on India’s growth trajectory. His great personality is endearing.”
Vajpayeeji has not made any public appearances in the recent past. We fondly remember him on his 92nd birthday on 25th December (today).
Atal ji was born in Gwalior in 1924. His first political brush was under Gandhiji, during the Quit India movement in 1942. In the next few years, he found his place in RSS. His fine skills as an orator, soon made him the public face of Jana Sigh (the then BJP).
In 1951, Vajpayee, who always wanted to become a journalist, “came into politics by mistake,” as he told Hari Ramachandran in the Reuters news service.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was announced as the PM of India in 1996. His tenure lasted only for 13 days.
We know that late Jayalalitha was close ally to BJP under Modiji. But did you know that BJP government collapsed in 13 days.
In 1998, he again became the PM under NDA.
India’s is now a nuclear super power, and its first nuclear missile-Pokhran was finally launched in the year 1998. It was an elated moment for the whole nation and a special mission for the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the then DRDO Chief, APJ Abdul Kalam.
Keeping the news under wraps even from its Defense Minister George Fernandez, AB Vajpayee achieved this hidden political (nuclear) mission successfully. Kalam broke this news on phone to the PM and later, stunned the world-India was now a nuclear superpower. But the government collapsed after AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa withdrew her support from the coalition.
Even when RSS was tagged for its Hinduism ideologies, AB Vajpayee continues to retain his reputation as a secular man.
According to firstpost, Muslim leaders have welcomed the government’s decision to confer the country’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. While some of them described the veteran BJP leader as “secular” and “peace loving”, others said he is a “true nationalist” and an “excellent human being”. Shia cleric Syed Hamidul Hasan, who is considered close to the former prime minister, said Vajpayee has always been the “ratna” (gemstone) of the country.
