Rajya Sabha is all set for elections on 26th March this year. Many interesting personalities are marking their competency for respective Rajya Sabha seats. A special mention of Ranjan Gogoi made the news as the president of India, Ramnath Kovind nominated him for this term.
Who is Ranjan Gogoi?
Born to Kesab Chandra Gogoi in Dibrugarh, Ranjan Gogoi is the former chief justice of India who served for 13 months.
His early life:
He completed his schooling from Don Bosco school (Dibrugarh). Later on graduated from Delhi University’s St. Stephen’s college. His father was the former chief minister of Assam who wanted him to join civil services. Though not interested, Ranjan Gogoi appeared for the exam and cracked it as per his wishes.
As he was interested in becoming an advocate, he convinced his father to let him pursue it instead of joining civil services.
Ranjan Gogoi’s career:
He was enrolled as an advocate in 1978 in the Guwahati high court. He later was appointed as a permanent judge of the Guwahati High court in 2001.
In 2010, Gogoi was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana court. In 2011, he was appointed as the chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High court.In 2012, he was made the judge of supreme court.
Ranjan Gogoi is the first person from North East India to be appointed as the chief justice of India. After becoming the 46th CJI he went on to pass landmark judgements during his tenure. Here is a look at his prominent judgements.
Here are his achievements listed:
1.He passed orders to avail the top court’sjudgement in seven languages.
2.A crucial case which was pending for several decades was announced. In its historic judgement, an apex court benched by him announced the Ayodhya land to be given to a trust named Ram Janmabhoomi kshetra trust.
- A politically sensitive issue was benched by three members headed by Ranjan Gogoi, in its judgement it dismissed the review petition for the Rafale deal case. It also censored Rahul Gandhi of calling PM Narendra Modi as Chowkidar Chor Hai.
- He also headed the bench on the verdict of entry on woman in Sabarimala temple.
5.One of his prominent judgements includes setting up of special courts to try MP’s and MLA’s.
- He passed a judgement on including Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC).
