Selling doormats with Hindu Gods, tricolour to hurt Indians – Should just an apology for a repeat offender like Amazon be enough?

Amazon Canada was selling doormats with the design of Indian Tricolour on its website, drawing the wrath of Indian community all over the world. As soon as it was found out that Amazon Canada is selling tricolour doormat, people started to express their anger on this issue. However, the company remained tight-lipped even after hurting the sentiments of Indians all over the globe. When a twitterati tweeted this matter to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, she was quick to respond, taking the matter with utmost seriousness it deserves.

Sushma Swaraj has asked Amazon to tender an unconditional apology for insulting the Indian flag, warning that the government will not grant visa to any Amazon official in case the demand is not met. She also threatened to revoke visas to Amazon officials that have been issued earlier. In a series of tweets, she has asked the Indian High Commission in Canada to take the matter with Amazon officials at the highest level. She expressed her anger saying that such an insult to the country, the national flag and sentiments of Indians is completely unacceptable.

However, the issue is whether it is the first time such a “mistake” has happened from Amazon ? The answer is a big NO. Amazon has been notorious for offending Indians since long. A few months back, Amazon USA was caught selling doormats which had Hindu Gods and Goddesses on it ! The doormats with photograph of Ganesh, Lakshmi, Durga and other Hindu Gods were being sold by Amazon USA. Which religion in the world paints its God on a doormat ? So, this cannot even be brushed off as ignorance or lack of knowledge of Hindu customs as no religion in the world puts its God on a doormat.. It also sold undergarments with pictures of Goddess Durga. After this incident, there was a huge outcry and Amazon had to take down all the doormats featuring various Gods and Goddesses.

Just look at some of the products (pictures below) that Amazon has been selling in the past and decide if just an apology is enough ! We salute Sushma Swaraj for taking such a strong action and warning Amazon to take down such product. Hopefully, Amazon learns a lesson and respects India and sentiments of Indians.
