The verdict of Ram Rahim has taken a sensational twist and now it says that he need to serve 20 years of imprisonment. 10-year sentence handed to the rapist Ram Rahim in two cases. These sentences are to run consecutively. So as per this, he will be behind bars for 20 years.
CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh pronounced two sentences of 10 years rigorous imprisonment in each of the two cases that date back to 2002 and this had been interpret wrong before.
Why this confusion???
The court had fined the Dera chief Rs 15 lakh in each of the two cases, of which Rs 14 lakh each would go to the two victims who were part of his sect and were coerced into having sex with him. Earlier, it was reported that the Dera chief would spend 10 years in jail for both rape cases.
The so called godman had cried after the verdict was pronounced by the judge. During the arguments before the sentencing, the prosecution said no leniency should be shown and demanded the maximum sentence for Gurmeet Ram Rahim. Ram Rahim Singh’s lawyers are set to appeal in the higher court after the verdict.
The trial against Gurmeet Ram Rahim commenced in 2008 and on September 6, 2008, he was charged under Section 376 (rape) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The Dera chief consistently called the charges false and baseless and has told the court that he is “not capable of” engaging in physical relations.
For last few days his followers have held two Northern states of India –Punjab and Haryana to ransom, by threatening, pressurizing and vandalizing. However, it didn’t deter the judge to pronounce 20 year imprisonment to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. A water tight case prepared by the CBI didn’t give the rapist Baba’s advocates to exploit any loophole. The CBI judge who was flown to Rohtak jail gave ten minutes each – to both sides to present their arguments. The CBI had sought life imprisonment, while the defence cited his age, health, and social work as mitigating factors.
