Professor Makarand Paranjape is a senior professor of English at Jawaharlal Nehru University. In the den of naxals and communists, he is one of the few intellectuals who has always stood for the right, without any agenda. He has often taken the communist students and faculty members head on, and criticized them in strongest of words. He is one of the most neutral and far-sighted intellectuals in the JNU campus. Last year when various anti-national slogans were raised in JNU, it was Makarand Paranjape who exposed the propaganda of the communists and asked them some extremely bitter questions exposing their hypocrisy and agenda to divide Indian society. Since then, he has been a thorn in the eyes of communists.
In a shocking incident, about 20 communist students of Jawaharlal Nehru University specifically blocked the entry to Shri Paranjape’s office and did not let him go to his office for quite some time. They not only blocked his way, but also abused him, raised slogans against him and called him by names. In a facebook post, Shri Paranjape described this shameful act and uploaded the video. However, he stood up to them and did not succumb to the bullying of these communist students who want to gag every sane voice in JNU campus. In his facebook post, Shri Paranjape writes :
“I was prevented from going to my office this morning by striking JNUSU cordons of students. The stand-off continued for a long time. They shouted slogans against me, called me names, and hinted that I was outnumbered twenty to one. But I also shouted slogans that I would fight for my democratic rights and the rights of all those who wish to dissent. In the end, I succeeded, but only after I had offered satyagraha myself, sitting down in dharna, and holding the students’ feet to push them away from the door. The guards were totally ineffective, though preventing a civil servant from discharging his duty is illegal. A lone voice is also effective if there is conviction or justice in your cause; JNU culture also means not succumbing or buckling to anti-democratic bullies.“
It’s an extremely unfortunate and appalling incident that the students of the university are behaving like goons with one of the most respected and senior professors of the institute just because he stands for what is correct, and exposes the dirty agenda of communists. Those who call themselves as upholder of ‘free speech’ and ‘freedom of expression’ bully every voice which exposes their nefarious plans, as Shri Makarand Paranjape has been doing. Last year, in an interview Shri Paranjape had questioned the communist student groups as why they deliberately call Goddess Durga as sex-worker or organise beef festival in JNU, but refuse to organise pork festival in Hyderabad. In a hard hitting interview, he had also exposed the nefarious propaganda of pitting one group against another to harm social unity. He had said, “There is definitely an anti-Hindu agenda in this, which is disturbing. Why are they trying to break the society ?”
