The man who is loathed as much as he is loved, but never ignored and that’s “Arnab Goswami”!! The well-known TV anchor.

The Managing Director of the news channel Republic TV which he co-founded along with Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Previously, Goswami was the editor-in-chief of Times Now and ET Now from 2006 to 2016.

On times now he anchored- The News Hour, a live debate at 9 P.M every weekday on the channel. He also hosted a special television programme “Frankly Speaking with Arnab”.

Goswami resigned as Editor-in-chief of times now on 1st November 2016. On the other hand his news channel “Republic TV” was launched on 6 May 2017.

Arnab had journalism and patriotism in his genes!!!

Born in Guwahati, Assam on 9 October 1973, his paternal grandfather, Rajani Kanta Goswami, was a lawyer, a Congress leader and an independence activist. His maternal grandfather, Gauri, was a Communist and leader of the opposition in Assam for many years.He was a writer and a recipient of the Asam Sahitya Sabha Award.

Arnab Goswami’s father is Colonel (Retd.) Manoranjan Goswami and his mother is Suprabha Gain-Goswami. Manoranjan has been a member of the “Bharatiya Janata Party” and contested the 1998 Lok Sabha Polls as the BJP candidate for the Guwahati to Lok Sabha of Assam where he was defeated by Congress candidate Bhubaneshwar Kalita. His maternal uncle, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, a BJP MLA from Gauhati East constituency, was the head of the Assam unit of the party before Sarbananda Sonowal took over in 2015.

Arnab started his career as a journalist with “the telegraph”. Later in the year 1995 he joined NDTV 24*7 in TV news broadcast and three years later joined NDTV’s core team as a news editor.

However, not many know the fact that Arnab before joining NDTV began his career as a journalist with “The Telegraph” in Calcutta. It was his shortest career stint, less than a year. He then shifted to Delhi and joined NDTV.

Masters from “Oxford University”!!!

Arnab possess a BA (Hons.) sociology degree from Hindu College, Delhi University. In the year 1994, he completed his Masters in Social Anthropology from St.Anthony’s College, Oxford University where he was a Felix Scholar.

In 2000, Arnab was a visiting D C Pavate Fellow at the International Studies Department at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge University.


Arnab authored his first book in the year 2002 named “Combating Terrorism: The Legal Challenge”. This book explores all the difficulties in framing laws against terrorists and terrorism. This was another passed on interest from his father Manoranjan Goswami, who writes short stories collection.

Set against the backdrop of September 11 attacks, Arnab’s maiden book examines the important question- whether terrorism can really have a legal solution? Adding to this the book also offers the reader a comparison of India’s own anti-terrorism laws with those in the west, specifically the United Kingdom.

Arnab’s recognition on TV was after his interview with Sonia Gandhi!!

Arnab’s first ever interview on TV was with Sonia Gandhi. For this, he gained a lot of appreciation as he got the otherwise reticent Sonia Gandhi for an interview on national television.

His natural flair for activism can be made by the fact that his grandfather Rajani Kanta Goswami was a lawyer, an activist. Bhupen Hazarika, one of the greatest musicians of Assam, is his role model for the multicultural identity that he too wanted. Arnab has received many awards and accolades. He was chosen as 46th powerful person in India by India Today in their 2012 list.

He also got featured on the cover of Good Times magazine and was also recently awarded as the IMPACT person of the year 2015. He was ranked 46th in India today’s high and mighty power list. He also received the Ramnath Goenka Award for Journalist of the year in 2010.

No wonder, he hosts his shows five nights in a week in News hour, one of the most watched shows on English news channels.
