In a much awaited launch of the Mother of all Health care Schemes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) or Ayushman Bharat scheme in Ranchi, Chhattisgarh today. The scheme, aimed to provide medical support to 10 lakh poor families across the country, has been touted as the biggest healthcare initiative in India’s history and will be operational from the 25th of September.

Ayushman Bharat scheme and its benefits..

Being one of the biggest initiatives by the Central Government under PM Modi, Ayushman Bharat is a Healthcare scheme aimed at providing an Insurance cover of Rs 5 Lakh to 10 Crore families in India. After the implementation of the scheme, it will provide much-needed medical relief to people who do not have the means to get themselves or family members treated properly.

This Scheme comes as a greatest blessing to those needy people in India who lack assets to treat illness, Considering the fact that medical health has been a constant problem in India’s villages, the scheme may open up doors to new partners to enhance healthcare facilities in the remotest of villages in the country.

Worth mentioning here is that the scheme aims to reduce the financial burden on poor people arising out of healthcare cost and to ensure that even the poor and underprivileged are able to access quality health services. Since Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have the highest number of beneficiaries at 1.18 crore and 1.09 crore families respectively, the two states are likely to receive more funds under the scheme.

All the families listed in the SECC database as per the defined criteria will be covered under the scheme. Also worth mentioning that this scheme has no limitations on the number of members in the family or even the age of the family members. How large or small the family is, the consideration does not include it.

The Scheme has a special focus on basic Health care of every family member. The scheme acknowledges the importance of need-based health care services in the country which is why priority will be given to girl child, women and senior citizens under the scheme. Each and everyone covered under the scheme will receive free treatment at all public hospitals and all the private hospitals on the panel.

Around 1,350 medical packages covering surgery, medical and daycare treatments, cost of medicines and diagnostics will be provided to the beneficiaries across the country and the scheme will cover all the pre-existing diseases and beneficiaries will get cashless and paperless access to quality health care services.

The government has also set up a special 24×7 helpline number which will help the eligible beneficiaries to avail services across India. They can reach out for information, assistance, complaints or grievances to this helpline number.

Yet another amazing fact about this initiative is that, this scheme does not allow any Hospital to charge an extra fee or additional money from the beneficiaries for their treatment. The scheme has been designed in such a way that it makes sure no illegal charge is obtained from the patients.
