This article was published 40 years back in the newspaper “The Hindu”; Irony is that the situation of Hindus remains the same even now

I am a Hindu and have been a Hindu, the Indian government will look at me as a communist. A Hindu in India expected to be  ashamed of his religion and not talk about it in a public. He must proclaim that he is a secular. He must be tolerant when Hindus are attacked and Hinduism is ridiculed. Hindus believe that all religions lead to the same truth. Some other religions proclaim their uniqueness and feel that they can be salvation only through their religion. They want us to embrace their religion out of concern for the  paganHindus. Hindus accept the right to convert others. Some ridicule Hindu gods and goddesses at street corner meetings and Hindus do not protest. Hindus accept others right to propagate their faith by fair or foul means.

Governments manage Hindutemples, they do not interfere in their administration of the religious places of other religion as they belong to minority religious groups. Govt enact laws governing the life of Hindus, but minority groups are given freedom to do what they t want to.

Sri Rama’s birthday and SriKrishna’s birthday are not holidays. The prophet’s birthday is a national holiday. The Hindudoes not mind as they are tolerant people. They recite “Ishwar allah tere naam”, and no one else does. Ambedkar ridiculed and abused Hindus and Hinduism. As tolerant Hindus, we love him, we adore him. Alladi Krishna Swamy Iyer, B N Rao and others also contributed a great deal towards the drafting of the Indian constitution. We have forgotten them as they were foolish enough not to criticize Hindus and Hinduism.

Hindus adore max muller for his translation of Hindu religious work into English. Some call him “A Rishi”. We forgive him for his views on Hindus and Hinduism. He translated Hindu religious works to prove that Christianity is superior to Hinduism. In 1886, max muller wrote to his wife “I hope I shall finish the work, and  I feel convinced though I shall not live to see it. Yet this edition of mine and the translation of the Veda will hereafter tell to create great extent on the fate of India. And, on the growth of millions of souls in that country. It is the root of their religion and to show them what the root is. I feel sure is the only way of uprooting all that has sprung from it during the last 3000 years.”.He wrote to the secretary of state for India that, “the ancient religion of India is doomed and if Christianity does not step in, whose fault will it be?” as trueHindus, we forget his motives and value him for his work.

I am distressed at the way Hindus are treated by every government. Our governmentsare  more interested in the minorities than in the majority community. Hindus are taken for granted. Their tolerance is mistaken for weakness.

In the name of secularism, govts trample on the feelings of Hinduism. The present tensions in the country are due to the one sided policy of the governemnt. The governments are united  in dividing people on the basis of their religion. The British have divided and ruled. The British have left us, their legacy remains.
