The saffron party’s entry into South Indian politics succeeded after its victory in Karnataka. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had bagged 17 seats riding on the Modi wave. This time even though the Congress party has managed an alliance with the regional JDS, the saffron party is aiming to secure over 20 seats.
The target of 20 plus seats is within reach provided the candidate selection is right. The coastal region of Karnataka is always considered as the strong fort of BJP due to the strong presence of Sangh Parivar. Udupi-Chikmagalur is one such constituency where the BJP had totally ousted the Congress party in the 2018 state assembly elections.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, this constituency was won by BJP’s Shobha Karandlaje by a margin of about 2 lakh votes against the Congress candidate K. Jayaprakash Hegde.
But this time a fresh face is doing rounds in the constituency and it is of youth leader Yasphal Survana. Mr. Suvarna has a very strong local presence as he is active in politics since decades. It is said that most probably he will be the candidate from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency because he has the backing of even the Sangh Parivar,
If Yasphal Suvarna is fielded as the BJP candidate in the upcoming elections, the BJP might once again win with a huge margin. That’s because he is the popular local face and knows the pulse of the people very well.
He has several advantages because he hails from the by fishermen community which has got the strength of 45 lakh voter in Karnataka and the community voters play a prominent role in 45 Lok Sabha constituencies in India. Being the General secretary of Akhila Bharathiya Fishermen Community and the President of Karnataka Fish Federation since 10 years, he very popular among all sections of society.
Now talking about other ticket aspirants, the current MP Shobha Karandlaje is said to be required for the state politics, that is why the BJP might field a new face. Another ticket aspirant from the constituency is Mr. K. Jayaprakash Hegde, 68 years old, who was the Congress candidate in 2014 but joined BJP couple of years ago.
It is said that BJP isn’t willing to give a ticket to an outsider due to several reasons. Sangh Parivar is strongly against Jayaprakash Hegde because of his past deeds while in Congress party. Another aspirant is Mr. Mahesh Poojary, who even though has the backing of Sangh Parivar lacks prior political experience.
So Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency might most likely get youth icon and popular local leader Mr. Yaspal Suvarna.
