In Uttar Pradesh, Yogi waives off farmer loans, but in Karnataka, CM tells “ask Modi”!

This is the difference between intention and determination and mere assurances! Agrarian crisis has been one of the major issues in the recent times during elections. But how much one delivers after getting power measures their real concern for the backbone of Indian agriculture.

It is almost 4 years since the Congress government is in power in the State of Karnataka. In the year 2016, the number of farmer suicides crossed the 1,000 mark in Karnataka alone and it was one of the top states with highest number of farmer suicide. As per the agriculture department statistics, these numbers were not more than 250 in any of the previous 8 years!  This was the reflection on the trust level of farmers on the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah. Though the government had assured farmers of waiver of farm loans to the farmers, the Chief Minister waited for Central government to do so and didn’t take any step from the State government, despite farmers and peasants expecting some measure in the last year budget itself.

On the other side, within 2 weeks of coming to power, Yogi Adityanath has waived the farm loans. This has given a relief to more than 7 lakh farmers in Uttar Pradesh. It was the poll promise by the BJP which has been fulfilled in such a short span of time. Along with this waiver, the UP government is also planning to bring Kisan Rahat Bonds to raise money for the loan waiver. Such progressive steps will definitely help in creating a support system for the farmers who are struggling in the battle between the natural calamities like untimely rain, drought, hailstorm, flood and so on as well as pests.

This definitely doesn’t mean that governments across the country should continue to do so in order to gain popularity among masses. Farm loan waivers can turn into biggest misuse too. However, when there are genuine reasons for the agrarian crisis and distress of farmers, governments should definitely take such measures to ease their lives.

Such decisions are taken based upon the leaders’ real intention to serve the people. One can wear green color shawls symbolically to be with farmers!  But being in real terms can be done even by wearing saffron color dress. Hats off to Sri Yogi Adityanath for being farmer friendly and serving the people in true sense. People will teach a lesson for showmanship towards farmers in Karnataka.
